Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - Despite a strong showing from Marco Gonzales, Jacob Turner was too much for the Palm Beach Cardinals as the Jupiter Hammerheads took game one of the series 4-1 on Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The two clubs will play game two of the 2014 Fins vs. Feathers Series on Tuesday night.
Palm Beach starter Marco Gonzales turned in his third consecutive quality start and made some big pitches in tight situations. Austin Barnes led off the game with a double and later scored the game's opening run on a Colin Moran infield single. Gonzales would finish strong, keeping the Hammerheads off the board in his final five innings of work.
Jupiter second baseman Blake Barber smacked a leadoff triple to deep left-center field in the second but was stranded by Gonzales to keep the Jupiter lead at 1-0.
The Sharks also threatened in the fourth inning, loading the bases with two outs, but couldn't push across a run against the lefty.
Gonzales scattered seven hits over six innings, allowed one run, walked two, and struck out four on the evening.
David Washington tied the game with one smooth swing of the bat in the fifth inning. Washington, who also homered last night in Fort Myers, slapped an opposite field homer to left-center for his fifth long ball of the year to even the score at 1-1.
The Hammerheads tallied three runs off Mitch Harris and Dixon Llorens in the eighth to take the lead 4-1. Harris, who relieved Gonzales for the seventh, allowed a leadoff double to Cameron Flynn and walked Viosergy Rosa before Llorens came into the game. Matt Juengel traded places with Flynn on an RBI double and later scored on a Barber ground out. Rosa scored on a Llorens wild pitch in the frame to give Jupiter the 4-1 advantage.
Harris (0-2) allowed two hits and two runs in 1.1 innings of work and took the loss for Palm Beach. Sam Tuivailala tossed a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts, but the Cardinals couldn't get the offense going against the Hammerheads pitching staff.
Turner, who is on Major League rehab assignment for the Miami Marlins, showed why he is a big leaguer on Monday night against the Birds. The right hander went seven solid innings, surrendering one run - Washington's solo shot in the fifth - on four hits and one walk. Turner (1-1) fanned seven batters in the game and picked up his first win of the year.
Colby Suggs turned in two perfect innings in relief of Turner to collect his first save of 2014 and preserve the Hammerheads victory.
The Cardinals and Hammerheads will play game two of the three-game set on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. RH Michael Mayers (2-2, 4.09) will start for Palm Beach against RH Austin Brice (2-2, 5.71) for Jupiter. Catch all of the action live on PalmBeachCardinals.com.
