DUNEDIN, FL - The Florida State League has named Blue Jays LHP Matt Boyd (4-0, 0.29 ERA) Pitcher of the Week and CF Dalton Pompey Player of the Week for the period of April 21 - April 27. This is the second time in two weeks that Boyd has won the award. He has allowed one run in his first 31 innings this season, and ranks second in the league with 37 strikeouts. Pompey went 14-for-31 (.452) this past week with a home run, triple, double, seven RBIs, nine runs scored and four stolen bases.
Last Friday in Clearwater, Boyd delivered one of the most impressive starts the FSL has seen this season. He held the Threshers scoreless through eight two-hit innings while striking out a career-high 12 batters and walking none. The 23-year-old from Mercer Island, Washington has held opponents to a .167 batting average, which is third-lowest in the league. With runners in scoring position, Florida State League hitters are 0-for-18 with nine strikeouts against Boyd.
The southpaw appeared in eight games last season, three of them with Dunedin, after being the first college player selected by the Blue Jays in the 2013 MLB Draft, taken in the sixth round out of Oregon State. Boyd is getting comfortable with being named Pitcher of the week, having been the PAC-12 Pitcher of the Week twice in his senior year. He was also named to the All-Pac-12 First Team, and was a consensus pick to be a Baseball America All-American, Perfect Game All-American, and Louisville Slugger All-American.
Pompey is batting .371 with a .434 on-base percentage while slugging .483. He also has scored a total of 17 runs, hit one homer, and driven in 13 runs. He is tied with Brevard County's Michael Reed for the league lead in steals with 12. Pompey is currently riding a nine-game hitting steak, during which he is batting .447 (17-for-38). On Sunday, April 27, Pompey went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and 2 RBIs. He needed just a homerun to complete the cycle.
Pompey won the 2013 Gold Glove Award for all Minor League centerfielders. MiLB President and CEO Pat O'Connor presented Pompey with the award at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium before the Blue Jays game on Thursday, April 24.
The switch-hitter spent the entire 2013 season with the Lansing Lugnuts of the Class-A Midwest League. He hit .261 with six homeruns, 40 RBIs and 38 stolen bases in 115 games. Pompey was named a Mid-Season All-Star and won the All-Star Game MVP.
The 21-year-old from Mississauga, Ontario was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 16th round of the 2010 Amateur Draft. Baseball America ranked Pompey as the #17 prospect in the Blue Jays organization entering the 2014 season.
