PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (April 28, 2014) - Bang. Zoom. Pow. Whack. No, that's not Adam West playing Batman. That was the sound of four Mets home runs on Monday night at Tradition Field. Any momentum the Stone Crabs had when they tied the score at two in the fifth quickly disappeared when the Mets opened the bottom of the inning with three quick runs Bruedlin Suero. Basically, the Mets showed why they've had the best offense in the Florida State League during the season's first month with a 7-3 victory in the first encounter of the season.
Jeff Ames' return from the disabled list ended after the third inning once St. Lucie broke a scoreless tie with the top of the order. A leadoff walk by Dilson Herrera brought up Brandon Nimmo, who pounded a high drive to the warning track in right center. Herrera scored to make it 1-0, but Kes Carter fired to Hector Guevara, whose one hop throw to third was right on the bag for Tyler Goeddel to apply the tag for the first out. Nimmo had been retired, but he'd be heard from later on.
Suero entered the game for the fourth inning after doing an admirable job with a few spot starts while Ames rehabbed. Facing his first hitter in Aderlin Rodriguez, the league's leading RBI man launched a solo home run deep over the left field wall for a 2-0 lead. Matt Koch had held the Stone Crabs hitless through the first four innings, but his control occasionally eluded him throughout the evening, which allowed Charlotte to tie the score in the fifth.
A one out walk to Josh Sale brought up Hector Guevara, who hit his second double of the season with a long flyball over the head of left fielder Maikis De La Cruz. On the very next pitch, Andrew Toles' grounder to second scored Sale to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. With two outs and the tying run at third, Leonardo Reginatto wisely dropped down a perfect bunt single up the grass at third to tie the score. Another single by Kes Carter placed runners at the corners for Patrick Leonard, but Koch struck him out to end the inning.
St. Lucie went right after Suero in the bottom of the inning after a one out single by Nimmo. T.J. Rivera's RBI double scored the run to make it 3-2 before Jairo Rodriguez hit the second home run to add a pair and give the Mets a 5-2 lead. In the sixth, right fielder Eudy Pina smacked the first pitch he saw from Suero over the wall in left for a home run and a 6-2 advantage. Nimmo then closed out his evening a perfect 4-for-4 with a solo shot to right on the second pitch from Ryan Garton in the seventh for the final run. The Stone Crabs scratched a run across against Randy Fontanez in the ninth after a leadoff triple by Maxx Tissenbaum and a sacrifice fly by Jake DePew, but the four run deficit was too large to overcome.
NOTES: Ames made his first start since April 12 against the Cardinals, when he left the game in the fifth inning with a strained bicephe had been on the Disabled List since April 14to make room for him on the roster, the Stone Crabs placed RHP Marcus Jensen on the Temporary Inactive Listthe four home runs allowed were the most in a game this seasonin the three innings a solo home run began the frame, Suero (4th and 6th) and Garton (7th) retired the next three hitters in orderReginatto finished 2-for-4 as the Stone Crabs were outhit 10-6Leonard's 11-game hitting streak came to a close with an 0-for-3 nightTissenbaum's triple and DePew's RBI were the first of the season for both players.
