West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - West Michigan Whitecaps starting pitcher Jacob Turner has been activated from the Disabled List and will start in tonight's 7:05 p.m. road game against the Great Lakes Loons at the Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan.
Turner, 18, was initially placed on the Disabled List on April 26, retroactive to April 22, with stiffness in his right forearm. The Detroit Tigers first-round pick in 2009, Turner was the ninth overall selection in the draft and is rated by Baseball America as the No. 1 prospect in the entire Tigers farm system.
The hard-throwing right-hander made his first two professional appearances with the Whitecaps prior to going on the DL. He struck out 11 batters without issuing a walk over nine innings of work, posting a 1.00 ERA and holding opposing hitters to a .206 batting average without figuring into a decision.
Fans can listen to Wednesday night's action on the West Michigan Whitecaps Radio Network. Play-by-play voice Ben Chiswick and color commentator Dan Elve will broadcast the game live on 107.3 WBBL-FM in the Grand Rapids area, 1450 WHTC-AM in Holland, and Sunny 97.3-FM in Big Rapids.
In a corresponding move, Whitecaps relief pitcher Nolan Cain has been placed on the Disabled List with a right elbow sprain. In nine appearances, Cain was 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 10.2 innings of work.
The Whitecaps continue their seven-game road trip with the second game of a three-game set at Great Lakes that begins with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday, May 5. The 'Caps return to Fifth Third Ballpark on Friday, May 7, for a 6:35 p.m. game at which the first 1,000 fans will receive a Brandon Inge Bobblehead Doll presented by Pepsi. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
