South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Lansing, MI - The South Bend Silver Hawks committed three errors in one inning, leading to four unearned runs in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts at Cooley Law School Stadium.
South Bend scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning against Lansing starter Aaron Loup (ND). Tyson Van Winkle led off with a single to left and moved to third on a walk and a fielder's choice. Chris Owings brought him home with a single to left for the 1-0 lead.
Leading 1-0 entering the fourth, the wheels fell off for Charles Brewer (LP, 2-3) and the South Bend defense. Sean Ochinko hit a weak grounder to Brewer, but his throw to first glanced off Matt Helm's mitt for an error on the first baseman. Brewer then tried to pick off Ochinko, but threw the ball away for an error, moving the runner to second.
Brad McElroy followed and hit a slow roller up the first base line. Brewer didn't field it cleanly originally, and McElroy legged it out for a hit. Brewer still threw to first however, and again the throw was off target. The third error of the inning allowed Ochinko to score and McElroy to take second, tying the game at 1-1.
After a strikeout of Balbino Fuenmayor, Eric Eiland singled and stole second, putting runners at second and third. Jack Murphy had a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1, then Ryan Goins launched a two-run homer to right to put the Lugnuts in front 4-1.
Nestor Molina (WP, 2-1) threw 3.0 scoreless innings out of the Lansing bullpen to keep the lead and earn his second win of the season. Casey Beck (ND), the younger brother of former Silver Hawk Chad Beck, followed with 2.0 scoreless frames.
Lansing added a run in the seventh on a RBI single by Ryan Schimpf for the 5-1 lead. South Bend threatened in the top of the ninth, scoring a run and bringing the tying run to the plate. However, a strikeout ended the threat and the game, as Lansing evened the series at a game each.
The Silver Hawks and Lugnuts wrap up the three game series at Cooley Law School Stadium with a 7:05 PM game on Thursday evening. The pitching matchup will feature South Bend RHP Eric Smith (3-1, 1.86 ERA) against Lansing LHP Evan Crawford (0-1, 4.00 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
