Tulsa Snaps Skid with 4-3 Victory Over Arizona

March 16, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release

TULSA, OK - In a game they had to have to avoid falling further out of playoff contention, the Tulsa Oilers didn't do themselves any favors in the first period of their Friday night tilt with the Arizona Sundogs. Tulsa surrendered the first three goals of the game then bounced back with four unanswered tallies in a 4-3 win over the Sundogs in front of 4,803 at the BOK Center.

Nathan O'Nabigon put the visitors on the board less than three minutes into the game when he re-directed Luke Erickson's feed past Oilers goalie Ian Keserich.

With under four minutes to go in the opening frame, Arizona got goals from Erickson and Kyle Hood just 17 seconds apart. After Hood's marker, Keserich was pulled and Steve Christie took over in net for Tulsa. Gary Steffes saved the period for the Oilers by scoring on a hard charge to the net with 1:21 left before intermission.

The Tulsa offense, which had failed to score three goals in 11 of the previous 12 outings, finally came to life in the second period. Veteran winger Michel Beausoleil pulled the Oilers back within a goal at 11:09 and the game was tied less than two minutes later when Oilers captain Tyler Fleck snapped home a shot from between the circles. Steffes deflected in the go-ahead marker at 16:57 and gave the Oilers four goals on the scoreboard for the first time since defeating Dayton 4-2 on February 14th.

Tulsa held off the Arizona attack in the third period and killed off late Sundogs powerplay to preserve the victory.

For the Oilers, it was just the second win in the last ten games. The two points proved especially valuable after Rio Grande Valley posted a 5-4 win over Dayton earlier in the evening. Tulsa remains eight points out of fourth place in the Berry Conference and returns to action tomorrow at Missouri.
