Tulsa Completes Comeback Following Rain Delay
June 27, 2021 - Texas League (TL)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Cardinals seemed headed to an easy win, scoring their seventh run of the game after the resumption of play in the top of the eighth inning to take a four-run lead.
But the rain delay seemed to awaken the Drillers as they quickly stormed back into the game. Miguel Vargas opened the bottom of the eighth with his third home run of the season.
Jacob Amaya then singled and Cardinals shortstop Delvin Perez mishandled a grounder for a costly error that put two runners on base for Ryan Noda. Noda capitalized by launching a game-tying three run-run homer to the top of the right field berm.
The long inning continued with back-to-back walks before a passed ball advanced runners Stevie Berman and Romer Cuadrado to second and third. Manager Scott Hennessey put Clayton Daniel in to pinch run for Berman and he raced home on a sacrifice fly from Donovan Casey to give the Drillers an 8-7 lead.
Aaron Ochsenbein entered in the ninth and retired the side in order, to cap the win and earn his second save of the season.
The night began positively for the Drillers as Vargas drove in the first two runs of the game in the first inning. Following Casey's broken-bat single and a walk to Michael Busch, Vargas laced a double to left center scoring Casey and Busch to give Tulsa the early 2-0 lead.
In the second, Justin Toerner continued to be a thorn in the Drillers side, tying the game for the Cards on a two-RBI double to right.
St. Louis Cardinals #2 prospect Nolan Gorman gave the Redbirds the lead with a two-run homer into the Budweiser Terrace, putting Springfield on top 4-2.
Brendan Donovan hit the Cardinals second homer of the night, on solo shot in the fourth, to up the lead to 5-2.
Cuadrado pulled one run back in the fifth with a solo home run, making the score 5-3.
In the sixth, Luken Baker added another run for Springfield on another solo homer to increase the Cards lead to 6-3.
Delvin Perez singled in the seventh and stole second before the rains hit. Once play resumed, Perez scored on a single by Ivan Herrera, giving the Cardinals a 7-3 lead.
