Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Pitcher Matt Palmer retired the first 13 batters of the game, then the next seven Tucson Padres hitters reached base safely and all scored as part of an eight-run fifth inning, en route to 8-3 win over the Albuquerque Isotopes.

The Padres were retired in order in every inning, except the fifth -- which featured six singles, a double, three walks, a hit batsman, three left on base, and 14 batters coming to the plate.

Jonathan Galvez's walk broke up Palmer's perfect game bid. Rene Rivera followed with a hit-and-run RBI double that broke up the no-hitter and shutout. Pitcher Thad Weber, Dean Anna and Daniel Robertson delivered RBI singles to chase Palmer (0-1).

Steve Smith replaced Palmer and allowed a two-run double to James Darnell. Smith also walked in a run later in the inning, and gave up an RBI single to Rivera (who had two hits and two RBIs in the inning).

Weber (4-1) allowed two runs in six innings, struck out five and walked one. The Topes first run was on a groundout by Brian Barden to score Chili Buss, who bunted for a hit to start the second inning.

In the sixth, Scott Van Slyke singled home Matt Angle. Van Slyke has 29 RBIs in 33 games this year. Angle has three hits in the game.

Wildredo Boscan pitched the final three innings to get the save. The only run he allowed was on a Ozzie Martinez RBI double in the ninth.

Game three of the four-game series is Thursday. Angel Castro will start for the Topes. Eddie Bonine is on the hill for the T-Padres. First pitch is at 8:05 MT.
