Sacramento River Cats News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Grant Green led the charge on Thursday night at AutoZone Park, recording a three-hit night en route to a 5-3 River Cats win over the Memphis Redbirds, snapping a short three-game losing streak for the first-place River Cats.
Green paced the River Cats offense, stroking two singles and a two-run double, Sacramento's only extra-base hit of the game. It turned out to be more than enough for southpaw Justin Thomas (1-2), who help Memphis to just one earned run on six hits in six innings of work.
Thomas walked two and struck out one, throwing 50 of his 83 pitches for strikes. The Toledo, Ohio, native was hit in the foot with a single off the bat of Jermaine Curtis in the sixth inning, and was removed from the game two batters later. Brian Gordon and Pedro Figueroa each threw an inning of relief, setting the table for closer Dan Otero, who picked up his eighth save of the year in as many chances. Otero allowed a single unearned run in the frame, keeping his ERA at a perfect 0.00 on the season.
Memphis starter John Gast (3-1)-who came into the game as the PCL's ERA leader at 0.26-was roughed up for four earned runs and six hits in four innings of work.
Jeremy Barfield, just up from Double-A Midland, went 2-for-4 in his Triple-A debut, while Shane Peterson's third-inning RBI single extended his season-high hitting streak to eight games. Hiro Nakajima went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a walk in his third game of a major league rehabilitation assignment.
Sacramento and Memphis conclude the series Friday night at 5:05 p.m. PT, when Cats RHP Jesse Chavez (2-2, 2.70 ERA) squares off against Redbirds RHP Michael Wacha (3-0, 1.82 ERA). The River Cats then head to Nashville for four games before returning to Raley Field Thursday, May 16, at 7:05 p.m., to kick off an eight-game homestand against Oklahoma City and New Orleans.
