Volstad Leads Sky Sox over I-Cubs, 5-1

Starting pitcher Chris Volstad (W, 1-0) threw five scoreless innings to help lead the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (19-13) over the Iowa Cubs (12-19), 5-1, in front of a season-high 6,171 fans.

After a scoreless first inning the Sky Sox scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning when Lars Davis plated Ben Paulsen who reached earlier in the inning on groundball single to right field. With the run in the second, Colorado Springs is now 16-5 overall and 5-0 at home when they score first.

An inning later second baseman DJ LeMahieu belted a home run, his first of the year, on top of the batter's eye to make it 2-0. The solo blast extended his hitting-streak to a team-high 18 straight. Iowa Cubs' starting pitcher Drew Carpenter (L, 1-4), then issued a walk to Charlie Blackmon who proceeded to score on Paulsen's third triple of the year.

In the top of the sixth inning, lefty Nick Schmidt relieved Volstad who blanked the Cubs for five innings. In his career, Volstad has started three games against the I-Cubs and has not given up a run, throwing 18 scoreless innings. After coming on in relief, Schmidt pitched a 1-2-3 inning.

The Sky Sox continued to build on their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Right fielder Tyler Colvin walked with one out and then stole second. The Sky Sox then strung together three straight hits, including a RBI single by Schmidt and a RBI double by Corey Dickerson.

Iowa finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning when Darnell McDonald smashed a solo home run over the center field wall. Sox pitchers Schmidt, Jeff Manship and Logan Kensing would combine to throw a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to hand the I-Cubs their second loss of the series. Colorado Springs will look to win their fourth series of the year tomorrow on Air Force Appreciation Night with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Lefty Drew Pomeranz (4-0, 3.51) aims to win his fifth game of the year tomorrow against fellow lefty Brooks Raley (3-2, 3.78)

Sox Notes: Ben Paulsen had two hits on the day including his third triple of the year and now has nine multi-hit games on the season...Three of the team's five runs came with two outs and the Sox now have 86 two-out RBIs on the season out of 193 total runs.
