Coastal Bend Thunder News Release

August 6, 2009 - Robstown, Texas - J.J. Trujillo followed Ricardo Morales' solid complete game performance on Wednesday with a complete game of his own on Thursday in Robstown. The Thunder ace's sidearm delivery gave the WhiteWing batters difficulty all night long. Trujillo, a native of Corpus Christi, a former major leaguer with the San Diego Padres, and former star at W.B. Ray High School and Dallas Baptist, was in control of all his pitches as well as the opposing offense. J.J. threw eight shutout innings, scattered seven hits, and struck out a whopping eleven WhiteWings hitters to improve his record to 3-1. The Thunder offense broke through late in support of Trujillo for the 6-0 victory.

There were a lot of zeroes found early on the Fairgrounds Field scoreboard this evening. The game was scoreless through five and half innings. The Thunder had scoring chances with runners on in the first and third innings respectively but simply could not get the hit needed to drive in the run. Rio Grande Valley did not get a runner to scoring position until the fifth inning and the Thunder defense backed up Trujillo by turning three double plays behind him.

Coastal Bend's offense awoke and broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth and took a 2-0 lead. Chris Lewis led off the inning by smacking a double to left center. The next batter, Leivi Ventura, smoked a groundball up the middle to drive in Lewis from second. Manny Mejia worked a full count and after fouling off a couple tough pitches, belted an RBI double to the gap in right center.

Leivi Ventura extended the Thunder lead to five in the bottom of the seventh with a towering three run blast that drove in both Kevin Butler and Chris Lewis with two outs. Ventura went 2-4 tonight while scoring twice and driving in four.

The Thunder offense kept rolling in the home half of the eighth. After Amadeo Zazueta's leadoff triple, Vickers singled to right to send Zazueta home making the score 6-0.

Coastal Bend look to take three of four from the WhiteWings on Friday, August 7 at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, Texas.
