WhiteWings Game Notes for August 6

August 6, 2009 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

The Game

The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings and Coastal Bend Thunder play game three of a four-game series tonight at 7:05. Left-hander Carlos Artiles (2-1) will face right-hander J.J. Trujillo (2-1). The WhiteWings

The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings hit exactly three home runs in a game for the first time this season on August 4, with Alberto Cruz, Joaquin Rodriguez and Juan Cabrera all going deep. The WhiteWings pulled off the feat five times in 2008, going 1-4 in those games, after doing so five times in 2007 and going 4-1.

Julio Santana bounced back from his first blown save of the season to pick up his league-leading 14th save, but not without allowing one run on two hits in the ninth. It was the second time this season Santana has allowed runs in back-to-back outings. The other time was in his first two outings of the season, which were both against Coastal Bend at Harlingen Field in June. Scouting the Thunder

The Coastal Bend Thunder lost their first seven games of the second half, the fist six of which were by one run each. The Thunder lost eight- straight overall, following a four game-winning streak (which came after a four game losing streak). The Thunder are 4-3 since then.

The Thunder are led by Corpus Christi-native, staff ace and former WhiteWings pitcher Toro Trevino, who is 5-3 with a 4.53 ERA in 11 games (10 starts). 11 different pitchers have made starts for the Thunder this season, with Trevino being the longest tenured member (since the fifth game of the season, following his lone relief appearance). Offensively, Amadeo Zazueta, who played for the WhiteWings last season, has the highest batting average at .311 while Leivi Ventura is showing the pop with seven home runs and 38 RBI. Alfred Joseph, who started the season with the WhiteWings, is hitting .280 with one home run and 23 RBI.
