State College Spikes News Release

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Andre Pallante, Jacob Schlesener and Jack Ralston combined to limit the Vermont Lake Monsters to two hits and notch 16 total strikeouts to lead the State College Spikes to a 3-0 victory on Thursday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Pallante, the Cardinals' 2019 fourth-round draft choice out of UC Irvine, struck out seven batters over the game's first three innings. The right-hander allowed just three walks and no hits after being bumped up a day in the Spikes' (23-23) starting rotation.

Schlesener (2-3) took over in the fourth and threw five innings of relief to earn credit for the win. The left-hander gave up both Vermont (18-28) hits, two walks and a hit batsman while racking up eight strikeouts in his first win since breaking the State College single-game strikeout record on July 3 with 12 whiffs.

Ralston (1), the Cardinals' 2019 seventh-round draft choice out of UCLA, then needed just seven pitches to get through a perfect ninth inning, which included one strikeout, for his first professional save.

Andrew Warner put the Spikes out in front in the sixth with an one-out RBI single, then Stanley Espinal brought in two runs with a single through the left side of the infield in the same frame.

Espinal and Terry Fuller each notched two hits. Fuller, a late entry into the lineup, delivered a double to start State College's sixth-inning surge.

Vermont's only two hits were a Marty Bechina single in the fourth and a Jose Rivas triple in the seventh.

Lake Monsters reliever Yorlenis Noa (0-4) took the loss. Noa allowed all three of the Spikes' runs on a total of four hits and a walk.

State College's shutout win was their second of the season after a 7-0 win over Auburn in a seven-inning game on June 17.

The Spikes now start a six-game road trip to visit the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox) and the Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals). The three-game series at LeLacheur Park against Lowell begins with a 7:05 p.m. matchup on Friday.

Right-hander Scott Politz (2-2) is set to make the start on the mound for State College, with left-hander Chris Murphy (0-1) scheduled to go for Lowell.

Following the road trip, the Spikes host a three-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs (Miami Marlins) from Thursday, August 8 through Saturday, August 10.
