Doubledays Fall to Renegades
August 1, 2019 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Auburn Doubledays News Release
The Doubledays (18-26) could not repeat their solid performance from Tuesday's 6-4 win over Hudson Valley, dropping Game 2 in their series against the Renegades (25-18), 7-5.
While Renegades starter John Doxakis started off the contest by facing the minimum, Doubledays starter Niomar Gomez quickly had his back against the wall. Hudson Valley's leadoff man, Greg Jones, tripled on an inside pitch and scored on a groundout. Another run came around to score on back-to-back singles by Garrett Hiott and Jacson McGowan, sandwiched with an arrant pick-off attempt in between.
After he settling down in the second inning, the Renegades added another run off of Gomez in the third on a double steal.
Doxakis went nine-up, nine-down to open the game, but unraveled in the fourth inning which allowed the Doubledays to plate three. Ricardo Mendez opened the frame with a walk and reached third on an Eric Senior double. Wilmer Perez drove in Auburn's first run of the game on a groundout, and Jose Sanchez connected on a 1-2 pitch to drive in Senior. J.T. Arruda reached on a throwing error which not only extended the inning, but advanced Sanchez to third. And an RBI single from Albert Carrillo topped off the inning with an RBI single to even the game up, 3-3.
Unfortunately for the Doubledays, the Renegades would take those three runs right back with a three spot of their own in the fourth. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch by Gomez loaded the bags, which allowed Mason Mallard to knock in a pair with a single to center field. The Doubledays defense turned a double play to escape the inning, but not before Nick Sogard could make it a 6-3 Doubledays deficit via forceout.
Gomez retired the first two batters in the fifth but put a runner on board via a hit by pitch. Gomez's night finished there, but while his ended on a wild note, it became a lot more wild when Trey Turner came in relief. Two wild pitches and a walk put two runners into scoring position, and a third wild pitch scored the runner from third. Pedro Diaz batted back from a 2-2 count to draw a walk, but a strikeout finally ended the disastrous Doubledays inning.
The Doubledays pushed across two more in the seventh inning on a forceout and a single, but could not muster anything else against Renegades reliever Andrew Gross in the game's final two innings.
The Doubledays will be back in action Thursday at 7:05PM for the series finale against the Renegades.
