Indianapolis Indians News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Center fielder Alex Presley broke open a one-run contest with a bases clearing, three-run triple in the top of the seventh inning and the Indianapolis Indians scored eight runs over the sixth and seventh frames to earn a 10-7 win over the Rochester Red Wings on Saturday night at Frontier Field.
The win improves Indianapolis' record to 49-46 on the season, while, with the loss, Rochester falls to 35-60 on the year. The win also improves the Indians' head-to-head record against the Red Wings to 4-3 on the season.
With Indianapolis clinging to a one-run lead in the top half of the seventh inning, Presley strode to the plate with the bases loaded and one out following an intentional walk. The Indians' outfielder made the free pass hurt when he lined the second pitch of his plate appearance to the gap in left center field for a three-run triple and a 9-5 Tribe lead.
In a game that went back and forth from start to finish, Indianapolis jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the second. With no outs in the inning, DH Jeff Clement stepped to the dish and quickly found himself ahead in the count 3-1. A swinging strike ran the count full, and, after four consecutive foul balls, Clement hit the tenth pitch of his at-bat out to deep right field for his seventh home run of the season.
Rochester responded with a run of its own in the home half of the third inning to tie the contest at 1-1. SS Trevor Plouffe reached on a fielding error to open the inning, moved to second two batters later on a single by DH Jose Morales and then scored on a sacrifice fly by 2B Brendan Harris after a wild pitch advanced him to third.
The Indians regained the lead at 2-1 in the fifth inning on an RBI single by LF Kevin Melillo. Back-to-back singles by Presley and C Jason Jaramillo set the table for Melillo, who hit a bloop single to left field to plate Presley with one out in the frame.
The Tribe's lead was short-lived, however, as the Red Wings tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth on Plouffe's 13th home run of the season.
One inning later, the Indians' offense exploded for four runs on five hits in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. 1B Brian Myrow coaxed a lead-off walk and trotted home two batters later on RF Brandon Moss' 12th home run of the season to give the Tribe a 4-2 advantage.
Following Moss' blast to right field, Negrych and Presley strung together back-to-back singles to put two runners on for Jaramillo. Two wild pitches allowed Negrych to score before Jaramillo lined a single to center field to plate Presley from third and give the Indians a 6-2 lead.
The Red Wings found themselves back in the ball game with one swing of the bat in the bottom half of the sixth inning. With runners at first and second and one out in the frame, RF Brian Dinkelman blasted the third pitch of his plate appearance out to deep center field to pull Rochester to within a run of Indianapolis at 6-5.
After the Indians' four-run seventh, which included a sacrifice fly by Jaramillo, Rochester responded with a run of its own in the Red Wings' half of the inning. Harris doubled to left field with one out and 3B D'Angelo Jimenez singled him home one batter later to cut the Indians' lead to 10-6.
Rochester pulled to within three runs of Indianapolis at 10-7 when Dinkelman scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Tribe starter Charlie Morton (5.1 IP, 11 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO) earned his second win of the season after allowing four earned runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work, while LHP Wil Ledezma (1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 SO) collected his seventh save after striking out three batters in 1.1 innings of work. Red Wings' RHP Brad Hennessey (1.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) was strapped with his first loss of the year after giving up four runs on five hits in one inning of relief.
In a game that featured 17 total runs and 28 combined hits, three Tribe batters - Moss (2-for-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI), Presley (3-for-4, 3 R, 1 3B, 3 RBI) and Jaramillo (2-for-3, 2 RBI) - each drove in multiple RBI, while Dinkelman (2-for-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI) was the lone Red Wings batter to drive home more than one run.
Indianapolis concludes its four-game series against the Rochester Red Wings on Sunday, July 18 at 1:05 p.m. RHP Mike Crotta is expected to get the start for the Tribe, while LHP Ryan Mullins is the probable starter for the Red Wings.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 12:45 p.m.
