Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, used Seth Bynum's seventh inning grand slam to win 9-5 over the Pawtucket Red Sox Saturday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. The victory was Syracuse's first of the series and it broke a three-game losing streak for the Chiefs.
Behind 4-3, Chiefs second baseman Luis Ordaz and catcher Carlos Maldonado put up back-to-back singles to begin the seventh. Boomer Whiting followed with a four-pitch walk, loading the bases for Bynum with nobody out. Bynum cleared the bases with a grand slam over the fence in right centerfield. Bynum's eighth long ball of the year put the Chiefs ahead for good, 7-4.
Syracuse added another run later in the frame on an RBI single to right by Pete Orr to go up 8-4. The Chiefs sent ten men to bat in the inning.
The Chiefs (52-42) struck first with a two-run third inning against major league rehabber Josh Beckett. After an Ordaz ground-out to open the frame, Maldonado belted a solo-blast to right for the game's first run. It was Maldonado's second homer of the year and his first since April 11th. A few batters later, Chase Lambin poked a two-out single to right field. The hit scored Whiting from second, doubling the Syracuse lead to 2-0.
After the Chiefs collected another run to go up 3-1 in the fifth, the PawSox (43-50) rallied for two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to grab the lead. Aaron Bates crushed a homer to right for Pawtucket's second run of the night. After the Bates homerun, Lars Anderson tagged a tripled to left center field. Catcher Mark Wagner followed with a sac fly to right, knotting the game at three.
Niuman Romero broke the tie an inning later with a solo-blast to right. It was Romero's third dinger this season.
Collin Balester won for the first time since April 15th against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He gave up two hits and an earned run in his inning and a third of work.
Santo Luis was charged with the loss, his first of the year. He allowed five runs on three hits over 2/3 of an inning.
Josh Beckett pitched the first four innings for Pawtucket. He gave up five hits and three earned runs. He struck out three and walked one over 81 pitches.
The Chiefs and Red Sox will finish up their four-game series Sunday afternoon at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse will send lefthander Matt Chico (4-4, 3.94 ERA) to the hill against Pawtucket's Robert Coello (2-2, 3.29). First pitch will be at 2:00.
