Indianapolis Indians News Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Indians catcher Dusty Brown drove in both Tribe scores with a two-run base knock in the fifth, while Indianapolis was able to hold off a late comeback charge from Columbus to defeat the Clippers 2-1 on Friday night at Huntington Park.

With the victory, Indianapolis improves to a 70-65 record this year, while the loss drops Columbus' record to 82-53. The win also gives the Tribe a 2-1 advantage in the four-game home/road series, while the Clippers continue to lead 12-8 in the overall season series.

Indianapolis opened the game's scoring by plating their two tallies in the fifth frame. All-Star 1B Matt Hague began the rally with a single to center before 3B Pedro Alvarez and DH Jeff Clement drew free passes to load the bases for Brown, who delivered with a clutch two-run single to right center, sending in Hague and Alvarez to make it 2-0.

The Clippers then narrowed the deficit to one in the eighth. C Travis Buck drew a walk and then took second on a groundout, prior to being sent home on 1B Nick Johnson's RBI double to left center to make it 2-1.

The Clippers however, narrowed the deficit to one in the eighth. C Travis Buck drew a walk and then took second on a groundout and subsequently scored on 1B Nick Johnson's RBI double to left center to make it 2-1.

Columbus also threatened in the final frame, but their comeback thoughts were thwarted thanks in part to strong defense. Former Indians C Luke Carlin walked, took second on a sacrifice bunt and headed for the plate when Fedroff singled up the middle, but CF Gorkys Hernandez gunned down Carlin with a strong throw and Brown held onto the ball when Carlin barreled into the Tribe's backstop to hold the Indians' lead. Hernandez has now tallied an outfield assist in three consecutive games for the Indians.

Valbuena (2-for-4, 1 BB) and Fedroff (2-for-, 1 BB) each recorded multi-hit efforts for the Clippers, while no Indians batters collected two or more base hits.

Indians starter Jose Ascanio (5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO) fired his second straight scoreless start, earning the victory Friday night after relinquishing just four hits in his five shutout frames. In five appearances, including two starts, in the month of August, the right-hander has not allowed a run in his 17.0 innings pitched.

The Venezuela native was able to work his way out of a couple of tight spots, including a one-out bases loaded jam in the fifth frame. 2B Argenis Diaz and SS Luis Valbuena recorded consecutive singles prior to CF Tim Fedroff's base-on-balls, which loaded the bases. Ascanio however, escaped trouble by inducing a pop out and groundout to keep Columbus off the board.

Relievers Daniel Moskos (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) and Justin Wilson (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) combined for two frames each in support of Ascanio, with Moskos receiving his seventh hold of the year and Wilson notching his third save of 2011.

Columbus RHP Corey Kluber (7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 SO) suffered the loss to fall to 7-10 despite giving up just two earned runs on only three hits in seven frames, in addition to seven punchouts. Relief pitchers Matt Langwell (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 SO) and Josh Judy (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) each followed Kluber with a scoreless inning of support.

Indianapolis and Columbus now finish their four-game home/road series on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jeanmar Gomez is scheduled to take the hill for the Clippers, while the Indians are expected to give the nod to LHP Brian Burres.

The contest will be carried on WNDE 1260 AM, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones, with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
