August 26, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Gwinnett Braves were drowned by the Norfolk Tides 4-1 on Friday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. One-time prospect Rick VandenHurk started for the Tides and outdueled G-Braves starter and one of the current top organizational prospects Randall Delgado to sink the home team. The G-Braves (72-61) remain in second place in the International League South, dropping to 3.5 games behind Durham. Gwinnett is also second in the Wild Card race by a 2.5 game margin behind Lehigh Valley and Pawtucket. The Tides (52-80) remain in last place in the IL South (all figures at press time, pending late games).

It Was Over When: Gwinnett's Delgado didn't have the dazzling stuff of his initial pair of starts tonight for the second go in a row, allowing two singles and a sacrifice fly within the game's first four batters for a 1-0 hole the G-Braves couldn't fight back from. Delgado threw 102 pitches in just 5.0 IP, with 56 counting for strikes.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starting RHP Delgado (2-2) went 5.0 IP, allowing 2 R/ER on 5 H with 2 BB and 5 K's for his second straight defeat.

At the Plate: Mauro Gomez, playing 1B, was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a SB to lead the squad. Ruben Gotay played 2B, went 2-for-4 and also stole a base, while CF Jeff Fiorentino was 1-for-4 with a SB.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Norfolk starting RHP Rick VandenHurk (9-13) went 7.0 IP, yielding just 1 R/ER on 5 H, 1 BB and 5 K's in the win. RHP Mark Worrell pitched a scoreless 9th inning for his 20th save.

At the Plate: Tides 3B Josh Bell paced the squad with a 3-for-5 night with a HR and an RBI. Brandon Synder at 1B went 1-for-4 with an RBI, while CF Kyle Hudson was 2-for-3 with a SB.
