Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Tribe offense exploded for 10 runs on 13 hits, including nine over the first three frames, while starting pitcher Hayden Penn held the PawSox to one unearned run on three hits over six innings of work as the Indianapolis Indians gained the series sweep over the Pawtucket Red Sox in front of a crowd of 11,227 on Friday night at Victory Field.
With the win, Indianapolis' record improves to 35-27, while the loss drops Pawtucket to 27-35 on the season. The victory also gives the Indians their first four-game sweep of the season, while giving them a final advantage of 7-1 over the PawSox this season.
Every Indians' starter reached base at least once, as five individuals turned in multi-hit efforts, three scored multiple runs and two drove in at least two. RF Brandon Moss (2-for-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI) led the way for the Indians' offense, while 2B Doug Bernier (3-for-4, 3 R, 1 RBI), SS Argenis Diaz (2-for-4, 3 RBI), LF Kevin Melillo (2-for-5, 1 R) and DH Brian Myrow (2-for-5, 1 R) also all turned in multi-hit efforts for the Tribe.
After Pawtucket jumped out to a 1-0 lead when 2B Niuman Romero came around to score on two consecutive Tribe errors in the top of the first, the Indians' offense exploded with six runs on six hits in the bottom of the frame.
Melillo led off Indians' half of the first with a single to right and quickly trotted home when Moss blasted a two-run longball to center field to give the Indians the 2-0 lead. The homer for Moss was his sixth on the season and along with his double later in the contest, he now has six doubles and nine RBI over his last six games.
Following Moss' blast, Myrow roped a single, moved to third on two consecutive Pawtucket wild pitches and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by CF Jonathan Van Every. In between Myrow and Van Every, 1B Jeff Clement drew a base on balls and would eventually come around to score after C Erik Kratz and Bernier lined back-to-back base hits.
Diaz then capped the first inning explosion with a double to left to bring home Kratz and Bernier and push the Indians comfortably ahead at 6-1. However, the early inning scoring was not over as the Indians went on to add a single tally in the second and two more in the third to jump out to a 9-1 advantage.
3B Pedro Alvarez continued his hot hitting as he drove in his team leading 51st run of the season with a double to deep center field. Coming around to touch home on Alvarez's two-bagger was Moss who reached on a throwing error to lead off the bottom of second.
The Indians then tacked on two more in the third as Kratz led off the frame with a hit-by-pitch, moved to third on a double by Bernier and came plateward on a two-bagger by Diaz. Moss then completed the Indians' scoring when he plated Bernier with a run-scoring groundout to propel the Tribe ahead 9-1.
The Indians added a final score in bottom half of the seventh as Bernier led off the frame with his season-best third hit of the season, a single to center, before moving to second on another base hit by Melillo and eventually coming around to score when Moss capped the inning with a RBI double down the right field line.
Pawtucket would get a run back in the seventh as they loaded the bases when 3B Jorge Jimenez reached on a hit by pitch, RF Bubba Bell connected on a single, and Romero drew a walk, before SS Gil Velazquez drew a bases loaded free pass to force home Jimenez and push the score to 9-2. Bell also added a two-out solo shot in the top of the ninth to bring the score to 9-3, but it wouldn't be enough as the Indians would hold on for the 10-3 victory.
Indianapolis starter Hayden Penn (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO) was brilliant over six innings of work as he surrendered just one unearned run on three hits, while striking out five and walking none to earn his first victory of the season with the Tribe. Relievers Brian Bass (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB) and Corey Hamman (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 SO) each allowed a run in relief but fought through the final three frames to finish off the sweep for the Indians.
Pawtucket starter Randor Bierd (2.0 IP, 8 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 3 WP) was roughed up for nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits and three wild pitches in just two innings of work to suffer the loss and fall to 1-2 on the season. Red Sox relievers T.J. Large (3.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 SO), Dustin Richardson (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 SO) and Robert Manuel (1.0 IP) each turned in scoreless outings out of the PawSox pen in relief of Bierd.
Indianapolis now hits the road for an eight-game road trip beginning in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, June 12 at 7:05 p.m. LHP Brian Burres is expected to get the nod for the Indians and RHP Dustin Moseley is the probable starter for the Yankees.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
