Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, finished their eight-game homestand with a 5-3 win over the Louisville Bats Friday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse won three of the eight games on the homestand.
The scoring started in the first inning for the Chiefs. Pete Orr hit a laser to right field for a leadoff double. Orr moved up 90 feet to third base after Justin Maxwell reached safely on a bunt single. The next batter, Kevin Mench, hit into 6-4-3 double play but it was enough for Orr to score from third and give Syracuse a 1-0 lead.
After scoring a combined three runs in the previous two games, the Chiefs grabbed three runs in the third inning on Friday night. Leading off the inning, Jamie Burke's grounder found an opening in between second and third, rolling onto the outfield grass for a base hit. With one out, Orr ripped a triple down the right field line, bringing home Burke with Syracuse's second run. One batter later, Maxwell collected his second hit of the game, singling to left field. Orr sprinted home on the play to make it 3-0 Chiefs. Maxwell eventually came around to score Syracuse's third run of the inning, tagging up from third on Chris Duncan's sac fly to center.
After the Chiefs added another run in the seventh to increase their lead to 4-0, the Bats made it a close game by piling on three runs in the final two innings. With two outs and nobody on in the eighth, Wladimir Balentien hammered a home run to left center for Louisville's first run of the game. The home run was Balentien's team-leading 10th of the year.
In the ninth, the Bats grabbed two more runs off Chiefs closer Joel Peralta to make it a 5-3 game. Chris Burke, Chris Valaika and pinch hitter Jake Long all registered hits off of Peralta in the inning. Peralta got shortstop Zack Cozart to pop up to second baseman Pedro Lopez to end the game.
Shairon Martis pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings for his fourth win for Syracuse. He threw 111 pitches, walking two and striking out three.
Chad Reineke lost for the fifth time this season. He pitched six innings for Louisville, allowing four runs and 10 hits. He walked one and struck out three.
The top three hitters on Trent Jewett's lineup card Orr, Maxwell and Mench combined for eight of Syracuse's 12 hits.
Burke, Valaika and Yonder Alonso each had two hits for Louisville in the losing effort.
The Chiefs head down south to begin a four-game series with the Charlotte Knights on Saturday night. Craig Stammen will be making his first start of the year for Syracuse. Matt Zaleski (4-4, 3.56) gets the start for the Knights. First pitch will be at 7:15.
