Tri-City Uses Strong Pitching to Even Series with Vermont

BURLINGTON, VT - The Tri-City ValleyCats used a strong pitching effort to take down the Vermont Lake Monsters 3-2 at Centennial Field on Monday night.

Jose Hernandez started the game for Tri-City, allowing one run in the third inning, before handing the game off to the bullpen.

Carlos Hiraldo then pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the win.

He was followed by Ian Hardman, who got credit for a hold, despite giving up the ValleyCats' final run in the seventh inning.

Juan Pablo Lopez also earned a hold with one and two thirds scoreless innings of relief.

Tim Hardy then sent the Lake Monsters down in order in the ninth inning to collect his first save of the year.

Offensively, the ValleyCats broke the ice in the third inning.

Gilberto Celestino brought home Trey Dawson and Enmanuel Valdez with a double to give the 'Cats an early 2-0 lead.

After Anthony Churlin got Vermont on the scoreboard with a single in the bottom half of the inning, the ValleyCats scored what went on to be the game's decisive run in the fifth inning.

Alex McKenna ripped a double into right field, scoring Trey Dawson to give the ValleyCats a 3-1 advantage.

Vermont scored its final run in the seventh inning on a wild pitch that brought home Marcos Brito from third to make the score 3-2 Tri-City.

Trey Dawson continued to impress for the ValleyCats at the plate, rallying a team-high two hits and two runs scored, with his third stolen base of the year.

Both the ValleyCats and Lake Monsters are now tied atop the Stedler Division with records of 9-8 entering the third game of their six-game series with each other.

The ValleyCats will return home on Wednesday, July 4 to continue their series with the Vermont Lake Monsters. There will be postgame fireworks on July 4 and July 5 as the ValleyCats kick off their six-game home stand.
