Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
ABERDEEN, MD - A trio of Hudson Valley hurlers held Aberdeen to one run on five hits as the Renegades defeated the Ironbirds 4-1 Tuesday night at Ripken Stadium at Leidos Field. The threesome struck out 11 Ironbirds for the evening.
Aberdeen jumped out on top with their lone run of the game in the second inning. A sacrifice fly from second baseman Alexis Torres scored third baseman Willy Yahn to give the Ironbirds a 1-0 lead.
However, the Renegades responded immediately with a run of their own in the third. After second baseman Garrett Giovannelli led off with a double to center, rightfielder Michael Smith moved him to third on an infield single to the pitcher. Centerfielder Tanner Dodson followed up with a 5-4 fielder's choice to score Giovannelli and tie the score at one.
Hudson Valley took the lead for good in the fourth when first baseman Jacson McGowan lined his first homer of the year over the leftfield wall. The solo shot pushed the Renegades in front 2-1.
The visitors would add some insurance with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Smith smacked a double to left to score Giovannelli from second in the seventh. In the eighth, McGowan scored from second on a line drive single to left from designated hitter Erik Ostberg to make the final score 4-1.
Hudson Valley had eight hits with Smith, McGowan and Giovannelli registering two apiece. Smith doubled and drove in a run, McGowan scored twice in addition to his solo homerun, and Giovannelli double and scored two more times to lead the Renegades' attack. Nobody had more than one hit for the Ironbirds.
Reliever Miller Hogan (1-0) got the win in relief for the Renegades as the right-hander struck out five over three shutout innings while allowing one hit. Righty Joe Ryan started the game and gave up a run on two hits over three frames with two strikeouts. The save went to Simon Rosenblum-Larson who put up three scoreless innings with four strikeouts on two hits. It was Rosenblum-Larson's second save of the season.
The loss went to Ironbirds starter Matt Hammonds (1-1) who allowed two earned runs on four hits in six innings of work. The southpaw also surrendered four hits and struck out three.
The Renegades wrap-up their three-game series against the Ironbirds tomorrow. First-pitch slated for 7:05. Right-hander Easton McGee (2-0, 2.81 ERA) will toe the rubber for Hudson Valley against righty Hector Guance (1-2, 5.56 ERA) for Aberdeen.
Hudson Valley returns home on July 5th when they open a brief two-game series and homestand against the Staten Island Yankees. Both games start at 7:05 and will include a postgame fireworks show. Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
