Batavia Muckdogs News Release
Today's Game- Today Batavia looks to win their second straight game, and clinch a series win over the West Virginia Black Bears. The teams meet again tomorrow, then Batavia goes on the road to Pinckney Division leader, Mahoning Valley.
That was yesterday- The Muckdogs bounced back from a sweep from Auburn by topping West Virginia in walk-off fashion. Elkin Alcala gave up a game-tying home run in the top of ninth, but then Brayan Hernandez was brought up after back-to-back intentional walks and hit a walk-off grand slam to win the game 8-4.
Offense Overload- In nine of the first 15 games, Batavia has managed to score at least six runs in each of those contests. Batavia has one of the top scorers in the league, with Jerar Encarnacion sitting in first place with 15 runs scored, Demetrius Sims in third with 13, and Sean Reynolds in fourth with 12 runs.
Exploding Encarnacion- Jerar Encarnacion has been on a tear to start off the season. On his current eleven game hit streak to open the year, he's hitting .479. Despite being down with injury, he's still second in the league in hits (23). He's second in doubles (6), fourth in extra base hits (7) and sits atop the league with his .479 average and second with his .500 OBP. He also has the most defensive assists by any outfielder in the league with three, all coming on June 19th against West Virginia.
Beginning from behind- The Muckdogs have had trouble with giving up early leads in ballgames. Batavia has trailed after the fifth inning on ten different occasions so far this season, and have gone 2-8 in those contests.
Turning up the heat- Batavia's offense in the last five games has seen more batters pick things up on offense. Sean Reynolds has added a .316 average with six hits and three RBI's in the last five games. Igor Baez has also heated up as well, batting .556 in the last three games, along with Demetrius Sims, who's batting .444 in the last 5.
Familiar foes- The Black Bears and the Muckdogs will meet nine more times this season after today's matchup. The next meeting arrives on August 5th-7th in Morgantown.
Recent Roster Action- On June 30th, Dakota Bennett was sent to the GCL Marlins, and Zach Wolf was assigned to the Batavia Muckdogs.
Marlins Update- Miami was only able to muster four hits in a 5-2 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday. Cameron Maybin took one of those hits deep to center for a home run.
