Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MIDDLETON, Wisc. - Phil Tresca's hat trick powered the Muskegon Lumberjacks to victory as they swept the Madison Capitols by a final score of 7-to-1 on Saturday, Jan. 8 from Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena in downtown Middleton, Wisconsin. In addition to Tresca's second hat trick of the season, the Lumberjacks received goals from Quinn Hutson twice, Ethan Whitcomb, and Jake Richard. On the weekend, Muskegon was able to outscore the Capitols by a margin of 17-to-7 in just two games after Friday's 10-6 thrashing by the Jacks.
1st Period
Unlike the previous night, it appeared the offense for both teams was starting to dry up as no goals were scored in the opening period.
After 20 minutes of action, the Lumberjacks and Capitols skated to a 0-to-0 tie.
2nd Period
The first goal of the game didn't come until 2:24 into the second period with a snipe from Muskegon's Quinn Hutson to make it a 1-to-0 score. Hutson's 16th goal was assisted by defenseman Jacob Napier.
Almost two minutes later, Phil Tresca would score his 16th goal of the season for Muskegon as the Lumberjacks doubled the score to 2-to-0. Jack Williams would get the only assist on Tresca's goal at 4:41 of the middle period.
After another two minutes, Tresca would strike again, this time shorthanded at 6:05 to make it a 3-to-0 score for the Lumberjacks. Jeremiah Slavin would add the lone assist on Tresca's second of the game, and 17th goal of the season.
With 2:01 left in the second period, Madison's Luke Mittlestadt fired a puck past Lumberjack goalie Aleksander Kuleshov to put the Capitols on the board. Mittlestadt's 10th goal of the season was assisted by Jake Dunlap and Nick DeSantis to make it a 3-to-1 lead, still in favor of Muskegon.
Through two periods of action, the Lumberjacks controlled a 3-to-1 lead heading into the dressing room for the second intermission.
3rd Period
Just 54 seconds into the third period, Quinn Hutson scored his second goal of the game for Muskegon on the power play to restore the three-goal lead. Hutson's 17th goal of the season was helped by Phil Tresca and Jack Williams to increase the score to 4-to-1 for the Lumberjacks.
At 6:44 of the third period, Phil Tresca completed the hat trick with his 18th goal of the season to increase the Lumberjack lead to 5-to-1. Quinn Hutson picked up the only assist on Tresca's power play goal.
Less than a minute later, Muskegon's Ethan Whitcomb would pile on with his fourth lamplighter of the season at 7:27 of the third period. David Hymovitch would get the lone assist as the Lumberjacks opened it up to a 6-to-1 lead over Madison.
Jake Richard would also add his name to the goal-scoring sheet for Muskegon with his seventh goal of the year at 8:39 of the third period. Richard's goal was assisted by Gavin McCarthy and Ethan Whitcomb pad Muskegon's lead at 7-to-1 in the third period.
In the end, the Lumberjacks brought out the brooms as they swept the Madison Capitols and remain perfect in 2022 with a 7-to-1 win over Madison.
