Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH -- Despite having to dress several affiliate players, the Youngstown Phantoms (11-11-2-3) earned a 3-1 victory over the Cedar Rapid RoughRiders Friday night at the Covelli Centre.
"We had some great contributions from guys who haven't been here at all until this morning," said Phantoms Head Coach Brad Patterson. "I'm very proud of that."
The RoughRiders took the lead halfway through the first period after a shot from Martins Lavins bounced and then rolled past Owen Bartoszkiewicz (25 saves) at 11:04. Youngstown answered back with a power play goal at 17:15. Shane Lachance's one-timer found the twine after a beautiful no-look behind-the-back pass from Trey Taylor to knot the game at 1. The Phantoms grabbed the lead 1:14 later when Gino Pichora's (18 saves) clearing attempt was blocked by Justin Varner. Varner threw the puck into Pichora's skates as the netminder backed into the crease and the puck redirected into the net.
Youngstown cashed in once more, just before the midway point of regulation. Just as a penalty expired, Adam Ingram scored on the breakaway, sneaking the puck through Pichora's five-hole at 9:21 to double Youngstown's lead. Youngstown's penalty kill was 5/5 on the night, marking the first time in five tries that they've held the Cedar Rapids power play off the score sheet.
A scoreless third period solidified a 3-1 win for the Phantoms.
Youngstown will look to get the series sweep tomorrow evening as they take on Cedar Rapids at the Covelli Centre.
