Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ)- Portland scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and edged Trenton 2-1 on Friday night at Waterfront Park. Trenton has now dropped three out of four, after winning five games in a row.

Portland (55-46) took the lead in ninth inning off of Thunder reliever Anthony Claggett (2-1). With one out, Center fielder Mickey Hall struck out but reached first base on a passed ball by Thunder Catcher Joe Muich. After Portland Shortstop Argenis Diaz lined out to left field, Second baseman Tony Granadillo singled to right field. Thunder Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez mishandled the base hit resulting in an error. The error allowed Hall to come around from first base and score the go-ahead run to make it 2-1. Portland reliever Beau Vaughan pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to collect his 14th save of the season. With the score tied 1-1, Trenton (64-40) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. However, the Thunder failed to score the go-ahead run. Portland reliever Richie Lentz (1-0) struck out Trenton Third baseman Chris Malec and Left fielder Colin Curtis to get out of the jam.

Trenton starting pitcher Phil Coke only went one inning and struck out the side. Coke was taken out of the game, and relieved by Eric Wordekemper. Coke ended up being part of a trade on Friday night between the Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Yankees acquired Outfielder Xavier Nady and Reliever Damaso Marte from the Pirates, for Coke, Thunder starting pitcher George Kontos, Thunder Outfielder Jose Tabata, and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees starting pitcher Ross Ohlendorf.

Portland took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Second baseman Tony Granadillo. Trenton tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Designated hitter James Cooper. Thunder shortstop Ramiro Pena extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the fourth inning. Thunder outfielder Austin Jackson had his 11-game hitting streak come to an end as he went 0 x 3. Trenton's bullpen went eight innings and allowed five hits and two runs (one earned).

Trenton and Portland will play the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Trenton's starting pitcher is TBA. Portland's scheduled starting pitcher is LHP Dave Gassner (2-5, 6.89). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
