Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders were stifled by Rock Cat's starter Yohan Pino as they were defeated by their cross-state rival New Britain, 2-1.

Connecticut took control of the game in the second inning as their lone run scored on a two-out single off the stick of Simon Klink to score Adam Witter from second. After two innings of play, the Defs had a 1-0 advantage.

New Britain equalized things in the third when Luke Hughes delivered an RBI groundout to plate Drew Butera from third. Olmo Rosario's errant throw towards a covering Kyle Haines at second base extended the inning as the run was scored in vain.

The Cats got back to work in the top half of the fourth. Danny Valencia started things off with a double to the gap in left-center. The next two batters were retired in order to put Felix Molina at the plate in a dire situation. Molina proceeded to smack a single to the outfield to send Valencia home to give New Britain a 2-1 lead.

Pino then set himself into cruise control. Twelve Defenders were set down in order during the middle frames as New Britain's relievers kept Connecticut honest.

Pino won his fourth, Dave McKae, despite throwing seven strong, effective innings, lost his fifth, and Ben Julianel locked down save number 22.

The game was played before a season-high 6071, but unfortunately ended in a Defender loss. Connecticut mustered just three base hits against New Britain's pitching as the Defs fell to 4-11 on Friday games in 2008.

These two teams will squabble Saturday evening at 6:35pm at Dodd Stadium. Tickets are available for the contest at ctdefenders.com or by dialing the box office at (860) 887-7962.
