A Series of Unfortunate Events...The Aeros dropped their first road series since May 2nd-4th, losing four of five to the Curve in Altoona. Akron fell 3-1 in the finale yesterday, gathering seven hits although 3B Matt Whitney's solo home run in the second was the only damage the Aeros could muster off Altoona pitcher Dan Reichert (whom the Indians recently traded to Pittsburgh). Reichert impressed for his new team, working 7.1 innings and allowing a run on five hits while striking out seven. In the sixth, Reichert sandwiched three strikeouts around a one-out double by RF Bronson Sardinha, and in the eighth, the Aeros couldn't capitalize on a first-and-third, one out threat against reliever David Davidson.
Lost in the Shuffle...Lost in the 3-1 defeat was the pitching performance by RHP Kevin Dixon, who worked seven solid innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. It was Dixon's fifth straight quality start, and followed his third career save when he went four innings of one-run relief in his last outing. Over his last six appearances (five starts) the Minnesota State-Mankato product is 4-1 and has lowered his ERA from 4.67 to 4.04, while striking out 30 in 37 innings. On the year, Dixon is 8-6 with 12 quality starts (out of 19 starts overall) and leads the team with 84 strikeouts.
A Different Bron-Bron...With LeBron James out with a sprained ankle for the U.S. Olympic basketball team, a different 'Bron has stepped up in the city of Akron as Aeros OF Bronson Sardinha carries an 11-game hitting streak into tonight's game, upping his batting average 16 points from .290 to .306 on the year. It marks Sardinha's second-longest streak of the season, after a 12-gamer from May 28th-June 10th. Over the streak, the native of Kailua, HI is hitting .375 (15-40) with two doubles, a triple and five walks. He has just one RBI on the streak though, and it's his only RBI in the last 16 games.
Battering the B-Mets...Looking ahead to this three-game set with the Aeros, Binghamton pitchers should be shaking in their spikes when Akron 3B Wes Hodges digs in. The native of Chattanooga, TN has clobbered Mets hurlers this year, hitting .385 (15-39) with five home runs (out of 11 on the year) and 14 RBI (out of his league-leading 75 on the season) in just 10 games. The former Georgia Tech standout has also walked five times, doubled once, and tripled twice for a .435 on-base percentage and .897 slugging percentage for the Aeros, who are 6-4 against Binghamton this season. 1B/DH Matt Whitney also has hit Binghamton well this season, batting .375 (15-40) with five doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI.
Crowe Flies Away...The Aeros made a roster move today, promoting OF Trevor Crowe to Class AAA Buffalo and activating OF Jose Constanza from the disabled list. Crowe was hitting .323 with four homers and 28 RBI, and also led the club with five four-hit games. Constanza has missed the last 23 games with a left shoulder strain and will DH tonight.
