Altoona Curve News Release
TRENTON - The Trenton Thunder (1-10) snapped a franchise-worst 10 game losing streak to start the 2006 season on Monday night, blanking the Altoona Curve 9-0. Starter Steven White (1-0) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out seven to pick up his first victory of the year.
Mike Connolly (0-2), who earned a no-decision against Trenton in this year's season opener, lasted just 3.0 innings, surrendering four runs on five hits and walking three batters. The left-hander has now given up 10 of the 16 earned runs allowed by Curve starters this year.
The Thunder notched three two-out runs in the second inning and went on to score in four of its next six at-bats to hand the Curve its worst loss of year. It is also the second time in the last four games that Altoona (8-3) has been shutout.
Justin Christian blasted an RBI triple in the second inning with two outs and later scored his first of three runs on a Ryan Howard single to put the home team in front. Seven different Trenton batters would drive in at least one run, as the Thunder piled up 10 hits against four different Curve pitchers.
Reliever Jorge Vasquez came on in the eighth inning and recorded just one out, while allowing three runs on three walks and two hits. Altoona's pitchers struck out just two Trenton hitters while allowing seven walks.
Adam Boeve went 1-4 to ex tend his on-base streak to 11 games, Rich Thompson singled to stretch his on-base streak to 10 games. The Curve left runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings as they were unable to come up with the big hit when they needed it. The Curve and the Thunder will play the second game of their three game series tomorrow night at 7:05 PM at Waterfront Park. Landon Jacobsen (0-0, 0.90 ERA) will start for Altoona against Tyler Clippard (0-2, 6.00 ERA).
GAME NOTES
Catcher Carlos Maldonado was called up to Indianapolis (AAA) earlier on Monday to replace former Curve backstop Ronny Paulino. Paulino was promoted to Pittsburgh to fill in for the injured Ryan Doumit, who also starred for Altoona.
The Curve and the Trenton Thunder play just two more times all season after playing five times in the first 11 games of the year
The ten hits and nine runs allowed by the Curve were both season highs
