
Eastern League announces weekly award winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending April 16th:
New Britain Rock Cats outfielder Denard Span has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending April 16th. The 22-year old is off to an outstanding start for the Rock Cats this season, hitting .450 (18-for-40) with one double, one home run, six runs scored, three RBI, three stolen bases, a .488 on-base percentage and a .550 slugging percentage in 10 games. The 6'0", 190 lb. speedster, who currently leads the league in hits and is ranked second in batting average and on-base percentage, has had six multiple hit games for the Rock Cats this year, including a 4-for-5 performance on April 10th against Portland. Denard was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 1st round of the June 2002 draft out of Tampa Catholic High School in Tampa, Florida and was ranked by Baseball America as the sixth best prospect in the Twins organization prior to the start of the season.

Willie Collazo, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Binghamton Mets, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 16th. Collazo has made two starts for the B-Mets this season and is 2-0 with nine strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA in 12 innings of work. The Miami, Florida native made his season debut for the B-Mets on April 8th and scattered three hits in five shutout innings of work to pick up a win in a 7-2 victory over the Akron Aeros at NYSEG Stadium. In his second start of the week the 26-year old was even more impressive, limiting the Portland Sea Dogs to just two hits while striking out six batters in seven shutout innings to lead the B-Mets to a 3-0 victory at Hadlock Field. Willie, who is tied for the league lead in ERA, ranked second in WHIP and tied for second in wins, was signed by the New York Mets as a free agent during spring training this season.
