Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Two brilliant performances during the first week of the Eastern League season have earned Binghamton Mets lefthander William Collazo Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending Sunday, April 16th.

Collazo (pronounced coy-YAZ-zo) made his B-Mets debut a memorable one April 8th vs. Akron, allowing three hits and no walks to go along with three strikeouts over five shutout innings, earning the win in Binghamton's 7-2 victory. That day, Collazo allowed the leadoff man to reach before retiring 11 of the next 12 hitters.

The Miami, FL native followed that performance with seven scoreless frames Thursday at Portland, earning another win and running his season-opening shutout streak to 12 innings. Collazo allowed two infield singles and once again didn't issue a free pass while striking out six. Portland only hit four balls out of the infield against Collazo, who retired the final 10 to face him in a 3-0 B-Mets win.

Collazo is in his sixth professional season but first in the Mets organization. A Baseball America Winter League All-Star after going 5-2 for the Carolina (PR) Gigantes this past off-season, the 26-year-old also made three appearances for Puerto Rico in last month's World Baseball Classic. The lefty has also pitched in the Angels and Braves organizations. Collazo was drafted in the 10th round by the Braves in 2001 after a standout career at Florida International University. He is the first B-Met to be named the EL's Pitcher of the Week since Brian Bannister, who was honored for the week ending June 19th, 2005.

The Binghamton Mets continue their seven-game road trip tonight, starting a three-game series at New Hampshire against the Fisher Cats at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, Binghamton begins a seven-game homestand against the Erie SeaWolves and Akron Aeros, with Thursday's first pitch slated for 6:00 p.m. at NYSEG Stadium.
