Springfield, MO - The Arkansas Travelers outlasted the Springfield Cardinals and won 9-5 on Saturday night at Hammons Field behind a career night from 2B Sherman Johnson.
Johnson finished 5-for-5 with a home run, four runs scored and two doubles. The five-hit night was the first for Arkansas since Kaleb Cowart went 5-for-6 on 4/3/14. Johnson upped his season average to .365 and has reached base in 28 of his last 48 plate appearances (.589).
3B Andrew Daniel and CF Chad Hinshaw both reached base safely four time apiece. Daniel, who belted his first career Double-A home run, went 3-for-4 with the homer, two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. Hinshaw finished 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs, two RBIs, two stolen bases and a double.
The Travs jumped on the board in the first with three two-out runs, including a DH Cal Towey RBI triple. Towey's triple gives him four on the season, leading the Texas League and tied for fourth in MiLB.
Springfield countered in the bottom of the frame with two solo home runs. CF Harrison Bader led off the frame with his fourth homer in five games and 1B Luke Voit follow suit with a mammoth blast to left-center with two outs.
The Travs extended their lead to 7-2 with a run in the second and three in the fifth, but the Cardinals also plated three in the fifth on a 2B Bruce Caldwell three-run home run.
Arkansas added two insurance runs in the seventh, including Johnson's home run, to make it 9-5.
RHP Kyle McGowin (W, 2-2) allowed the five runs on seven hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over six innings of work. Four Travs pitchers worked the final three innings without allowing a run.
Arkansas entered 5-last-45 with RISP, and after starting Saturday 0-for-2, finished 6-for-15.
With the win, Arkansas improved to 9-12 on the season and moved to within two games of Springfield atop the Texas League North. The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 2:10 p.m. before concluding the series on Monday morning.
