Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO - The best team in the Texas League so far in this 2016 campaign was once again not to be denied a victory.
The Frisco RoughRiders scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to down the Corpus Christi Hooks and win 4-3 in front of 10,004 fans at Dr Pepper Ballpark on Saturday night.
For Frisco (17-4), they improved on their best start in franchise history and won their sixth game in a row.
Corpus Christi (9-12) has gone in the opposite direction. This defeat marks the sixth straight loss for the Hooks and their ninth in the last ten games
The Riders opened the scoring in the second inning. Ryan Cordell led off by reaching on an error committed by second baseman Chan-Jong Moon. Ronald Guzman advanced him a base further by hitting a single off Hooks' starter Edison Frias. Garrett Weber drove Cordell home with a single of his own to give Frisco the early 1-0 lead.
It was another fantastic night on the hill for a couple Corpus Christi hurlers. Edison Frias went five strong innings, giving up four hits, the one unearned run, walked two, and struck out three. He was followed by a masterful performance from Cy Sneed. Sneed went three innings, surrendered just two hits, two walks, and fanned four.
The offensive MVP for the Hooks was once again Chase McDonald. McDonald stepped up to the plate with a runner on trailing by one in the top of the sixth. He sent the first offering from Frisco pitcher Frank Lopez over the wall in left-center to give the Hooks a 2-1 lead. In addition to the homer, he drew a walk in the fourth inning.
Corpus Christi got its other run in the ninth inning. James Ramsay walked and advanced later in the inning on a wild pitch. Now in scoring position, he was able to score when a ground ball (hit by Moon) bounced off the arm of Riders' first baseman Ronald Guzman and careened into right field. The Hooks went to the bottom of the ninth with a 3-1 lead and seemingly in control of the game.
The rally against new pitcher Brendan McCurry (0-1) started quickly with two singles by Cordell and Guzman. After a strikeout of Weber, Luis Mendez drew a walk to load the bases. Two batters later (after an Alberto Triunfel strikeout), Isiah Kiner-Falefa was hit by a pitch to bring the Riders within one. McCurry then walked Chris Gimenez on four straight pitches to bring in the tying run. Zach Cone followed by drilling a 3-2 pitch over the leaping third baseman Jack Mayfield to score Luis Mendez and end the game.
The Hooks now turn their attention to earning a split in the four game series against the RoughRiders. Game number three is set for a 4:05 start on Sunday afternoon at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Kevin Piel will have the call on NewsRadio 1360 KKTX with pregame beginning around 3:45.
