Arkansas Travelers News Release
TULSA, OKLAHOMA - The Arkansas Travelers were thwarted in their attempt for a four-game sweep losing to the Tulsa Drillers on Monday night 5-1. Failing to backup Trevor Reckling's (L, 7-4) strong six inning performance, the Travs left nine runners on base and bounced into two double plays. Reckling suffered a loss for the second time in his last nine starts scattering seven base hits and two walks over six innings while striking out six. Tulsa left hander Brandon Durden (W, 5-2) earned the win mostly pitching around nine base hits over seven innings allowing just one run.
Durden kept the Travs from scoring in the first inning for the only time during the series after allowing a pair of singles to Pete Bourjos and Nate Sutton, the Travs had runners at the corners with one out. Mark Trumbo went after Durden's first pitch and hit a high chopper to shortstop where Danny Sandoval began a 6-4-3 double play.
The first three Tulsa batters reached base in the second inning against Reckling to get the Drillers the lead. Ryan Harvey hit a leadoff single and advanced to third base when Mike McKenry swatted a 2-2 pitch for a double to the right-field corner. Cole Garner's fly ball to right field fell in for an RBI single to knock in Harvey while McKenry moved up to third base. With one out, Daniel Carte took advantage of the infielders playing back as he knocked in McKenry with a groundout to second base putting Tulsa ahead 2-0.
Sutton opened the top of the fourth with a double to center field and Trumbo followed with a hard single to center moving Sutton to third base. Hank Conger followed with a bouncer picked up by third baseman Darin Holcomb who hesitated before throwing to second for a force out. Conger beat the relay at first base as Sutton scored the Travs' only run.
Durden finished his seven innings with a flourish by retiring six of the final seven batters he faced. Matt Reynolds and Alberto Alburquerque each finished one scoreless inning to complete the game.
Reckling struck out the last two batters of the sixth inning before giving Barret Browning the ball for the seventh. Browning hit the first batter he faced and allowed two runs on two hits and another hit batter as the Travs fell behind 4-1 after seven innings.
Cole Garner homered (12) for the second straight game leading off the eighth inning off Bryan Rembisz to close out the scoring.
Time of game was 2:20 and the paid attendance numbered 3,443.
The Travs will kick off a quick three-game series at Springfield beginning Tuesday night. Left hander Alex Torres (10-3, 2.74 ERA at Rancho Cucamonga) will take the hill for the Travs in his class-AA debut against Cardinals righty Brandon Dickson (7-6, 3.35). First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
