SPRINGDALE, AR- Chaz Roe pitched the 23rd complete game the Texas League has seen in 2009 as his Tulsa Drillers beat the Naturals by an 11-3 final Tuesday.
Roe (5-2) went the distance allowing seven hits and three runs while issuing three walks and fanning three. He threw 108 pitches, 67 of them for strikes.
Tulsa got on the board first when Darin Holcomb went deep for his tenth homer of the season to give the Drillers the early 1-0 lead. The Naturals tried to answer back in the bottom of the frame when they got a leadoff double by David Lough and a sacrifice bunt by Jarrod Dyson to move him to third. But the Naturals had the runner erased on a fielders choice when Jeff Bianchi grounded it to third and Holcomb threw out Lough trying to score. They did get solo shot by Marc Maddox in the second though which knotted the score at one.
Tulsa answered right back with an RBI single from Jeff Kindel in the third to put the Drillers up by a 2-1 margin.
The game was broken open in the fifth when they scored five runs, three unearned, off Naturals' starter Matt Kniginyzky (4-9). Danny Sandoval and Holcomb walked and were driven in by Kindel, who doubled to left-center. Michael Paulk then reached on an error by Naturals' center fielder David Lough. Mike McKenry followed and singled, but Kindel was cut down at the plate on an excellent throw by Naturals right fielder Ed Lucas. Cole Garner followed with an RBI single to put Tulsa up 5-1. With two out, Ryan Harvey drove in two more runs with a single to put the Naturals in a 7-1 hole, ending Kniginyzky's day.
He ended up charged with eight hits and seven runs, four earned, in 4 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two. Gilbert De La Vara followed and got the final out of the fourth but was charged with four runs in the seventh inning. Ryan Harvey hit a three-run homer and Danny Sandoval also had a solo shot in the frame, which put Tulsa (22-16, 60-48) up 11-2.
Northwest Arkansas (22-16, 58-50) did get runs on the board in the fifth and ninth innings off Roe. Jarrod Dyson's RBI single in the fifth drove in David Lough, and Ed Lucas had an RBI double in the ninth. The Naturals were outhit 16-7 on the evening and only got four runners into scoring position.
