Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
Seven doubles and Drew Locke's grand slam in the fifth inning Monday night highlighted Corpus Christi's 12-5 romp of the RockHounds in their final meeting at Citibank Ballpark this season.
The Hooks (17-20, 48-59) are now three games back of Midland (20-17, 57-50) and Frisco for first place in the Texas League South second-half race.
Corpus Christi jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings against RockHound starter Justin Souza. Doubles by Mark Ori, Nick Moresi and Jason Castro paved the way toward four runs in the second.
The Hooks added three more tallies in the third. Jhon Florentino opened the frame with a single to center. Following a fly out and passed ball, Mitch Einertson put runners at the corners on a scratch hit to short. Moresi made it 5-1 Corpus Christi in the next at-bat, hitting into a force play that allowed Florentino to score. Wladmir Sutil followed with a two-bagger to left, plating Einertson from first base. Sutil later crossed home plate to give the Hooks a six-run advantage when shortstop Jemile Weeks airmailed a throw over first base on ground ball from Drew Meyer.
Souza (0-2) was charged with three earned runs and nine hits in three innings
Hooks starter Kenny Baugh, 3-0 in his last four starts, held the Hounds to one run over the first five frames. The Houston native yielded four runs and nine hits in 6.1 innings. Baugh (3-1) walked a batter and fanned two while tossing 95 pitches, 62 for strikes.
Chia-Jen Lo faced the next six batters, recording five outs. He allowed one hit and struck out two.
Locke, Corpus Christi's offensive player of the month for April, May and July, smashed his second grand slam of the season in the fifth, a two-out shot to left-center for an 11-1 lead.
Sutil went 4-for-6 with four runs scored, two doubles and an RBI. Castro was 3-for-5 and plated a pair. Moresi, who finished the series 5-of-14 with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and four RBI's, also drove in two.
The Hooks head to San Antonio for a three-game series against the Missions. Corey Kluber (1-0) is slated to face Corpus Christi's Serigo Perez (7-9) in the opener Tuesday night.
