Arkansas Travelers News Release
North Little Rock - The Travs mustered three hits in losing 5-0 to the Tulsa Drillers on Tuesday, Aug. 23, in the first game of a four-game series at Dickey-Stephens Park. An announced crowd of 2,932 watched the Travs lose their fourth straight.
The Drillers got the scoring started when center fielder Tim Wheeler hit a one-out single to right field in the top of the third inning and stole second base. Wheeler moved to third base on a ground out and scored when Travs' starter Matt Shoemaker balked attempting to pick off Ben Paulsen at first base. Shoemaker had Paulsen picked off for the third out, but home plate umpire Brian deBrauwere called Shoemaker for the balk for a 1-0 Tulsa lead.
Shoemaker, a righty, walked Wheeler to start the top of the fifth inning, but Wheeler was caught stealing for the first out. Shortstop Hector Gomez reached on first baseman Gabe Jacobo's fielding error and advanced to second base on a ground out. Tulsa catcher Wilin Rosario hit a two-out RBI single up the middle to score Gomez for an unearned run and gave the Drillers a 2-0 lead.
Shoemaker (12-3, 2.21) picked up the loss pitching six innings. He gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks, while striking out four.
Tommy Field tripled off the left-field wall to begin the top of the sixth and scored on Brian Rike's single to centerfield, putting the Drillers up by three runs.
Little Rock native righty Josh Sullivan (4-8, 5.79) gave up one hit, a double to Travs' designated hitter Orlando Mercado in the second inning, earning the win. He finished with five scoreless innings, striking out five without a walk.
The Travs made it to third base one time in the game when Luis Jimenez reached on an infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning. He advanced to second when third baseman Eric Wetzel threw wildly to first for an error and Jimenez made it to third base on a ground out by Jacobo, only to be stranded there when Chris Pettit struck out.
Adam Jorgenson picked up the hold and Dustin Molleken picked up his fourth save for the Drillers. The two relievers each pitched two scoreless innings, giving up a hit and striking out two without a walk.
Travs' righty reliever Steven Geltz relieved for Shoemaker in the top of the seventh inning and pitched two scoreless innings allowing a hit and striking out two.
The Drillers outhit the Travs 11 to 3 and batted 3 for 12 with runners in scoring position, leaving nine men on base. The Travs left three men on due to lack of base runners and were 0 for 3 with RISP in a 3-hour, 5-minute game.
Travs' center fielder Matt Long and Jimenez each batted 1 for 4 and Mercado went 1 for 3 for the team's only hits.
Wheeler led the Drillers going 3 for 4 and scoring two runs. Gomez, Sardinha and Rike each had an RBI apiece, and Sardinha and Field both went 2 for 4.
The Travs continue the series with the Drillers on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Dickey-Stephens Park. Righty Christian Scholl (2-3, 2.20) gets the start for the Travs and righty Dan Houston (4-3, 4.48) starts for the Drillers.
Scholl is making his fifth start of the year for the Travs and got a no-decision his last time out against Corpus Christi on Aug. 19. He gave up one run on four hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out five. Houston got the win against the Midland Rockhounds his last outing on Aug. 19. He gave up two runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings, striking out three.
