Arkansas Travelers News Release

San Antonio, Texas - The San Antonio Missions used a five-run rally to take control in an 8-4 defeat of the Arkansas Travelers that finished off a three-game sweep at Wolff Stadium. The big rally came in the second inning with six Missions base hits including four in a row. The Travs were in a giving mood with two errors along with six walks in 3.1 innings from starting pitcher Andrew Taylor (2-11) who lost his 9th straight decision. Second baseman Dwayne Bailey led the way for the Travs with three base hits, while Roberto Lopez added a home run (10).

The loss drops the Travs to 27-29 in the second half (63-60 overall). With their last regular season trip to the Alamo City now behind them, the Travs went 0-6 at San Antonio this season. The Missions improve to a Texas League best 37-19 in the second half (also a league best 86-40 overall).

The Travs had numerous chances for a big inning, but never could capitalize in a game where they outhit the Missions 13-9. Centerfielder Matt Long twice grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to end an inning. The Missions cut down two Travs base runners and left ten Travs base runners.

Taylor survived a bout of wildness in the first inning leaving the bases loaded after issuing three consecutive two-out walks.

After Lopez connected on a home run leading off the second inning, the Travs then loaded the bases on Missions starter Robbie Erlin on a walk and singles by Dwayne Bailey and Blake Gailen. Erlin slipped through though as Darwin Perez hit a fly out to shallow right field, and Matt Long bounced into a double play to end the inning.

The Missions pounced quickly on Taylor with singles from Jason Hagerty and Amadeo Zazueta, then Daniel Robertson walked to load the bases. Blake Tekotte brought in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to left field. Then the flood gates opened with Andrew Parrino whacking an RBI single to left field bringing in Zazueta ahead of Blake Gailen's wild throw with the go-ahead run. Gailen's throwing error set up Jaff Decker with runners at second and third bases, and he delivered a two-run single to center field. Jedd Gyorko moved Decker to second base with a single, then Sawyer Carroll completed the rally with an RBI double scoring Decker for a 5-1 Missions lead.

The Travs had chances the next two innings to do real damage, but scored only two of six runners that reached base to get within a 5-3 deficit.

In the fourth inning after retiring the first batter, Taylor walked Decker then served up a two-run homer to Gyorko (5). Taylor then walked Sawyer Carroll and exited after Darwin Perez bungled a ground ball. The Missions scored three runs off Taylor in the fourth inning to grab an 8-3 lead.

Loek Van Mil relieved Taylor and continued to provide excellent work out of the bullpen with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Jorge Reyes (8-3) earned the win in relief of Erlin, who went only three innings and allowed two runs on six base hits. Reyes gave up a run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Pettit that scored Bailey, but finished three innings and gave up just the one run on three hits adding four strikeouts.

The Travs return to Central Arkansas Tuesday night to kick off the last home stand of the regular season. They'll host the Tulsa Drillers on Tuesday in the first of a four game series with ace right hander Matt Shoemaker (12-2, 2.18) greeting Little Rock native Josh Sullivan (3-8, 6.08) for the Drillers. First pitch at Dickey-Stephens Park is thrown at 7:10 p.m.
