Travs Lose Big to Cards, 11-4

North Little Rock - The Arkansas Travelers lost to the Springfield Cardinals 11-4 on Monday night at Dickey-Stephens Park. The Cards came out swinging, picking up 15 hits and scoring at least one run in six out of nine innings. The Travs couldn't match the offensive attack of the Cards only picking up four hits of their own and striking out 11 times.

After the loss the Travs drop to 26-43, and the Cardinals improve their record to 37-32 with the win.

The Travs sent out California League All-Star Tyler Chatwood to make his first double-A appearance. Chatwood (0-1) took the loss after throwing 2.2 innings, giving up eight hits and six runs. Springfield started right-hander Mark Diapoules (1-0) who picked up his sixth win in his double-A debut. Diapoules threw five innings only giving up two hits and three runs.

The Cards struck first scoring in the first inning. Tony Cruz hit a one out single up the middle followed by a single from Matt Carpenter putting runners on first and second. Curt Smith flew out to center for the second, but it was deep enough to advance Cruz to third base putting runners on the corners. Aaron Luna singled to left center to score Cruz and make the score 1-0. Adron Chambers was struck out to end the inning.

The Travs picked up their first run of the game in the bottom of the second without getting a hit. Julio Perez and Abel Nieves led things off and were hit by pitches to put runners on first and second with no outs. Alberto Lopez followed with a walk to load the bases. Efren Navarro flew out to center field scoring Perez from third tying the game at one. Alberto Rosario came up with runners of first and second, and ground to short for a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

The Cards had a big third inning scoring five runs making the score 6-1. Cruz came up with one out and drew a walk followed by a single form Carpenter. Smith singled scoring Cruz form second making the score 2-1. Luna walked to load the bases and bring up Chambers. Chambers tripled to right center clearing the bases and making the score 5-1. Pete Kozma came up and hit a single to score Chambers from third. Kozma was caught trying to steal second for the second out. Mike Folli singled followed by a Antone DeJesus walk putting runners on first and second, but Jones grounded out to first for the third out of the inning leaving the runners on base.

The Cards added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning starting with a one out walk to Smith. The walk was followed with three singles from Luna, Chambers and Kozma which brought the three runs to the plate.

The Travs picked up three more runs in the remainder of the game. They scored one run in each of the third, fourth and seventh innings. Clay Fuller (4) helped with one of those runs, hitting a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh.

The game was played in 3:33 minutes in front of 3,701 fans.

The Travs will take the field again on Tuesday against the Springfield Cardinals. The Travs will send out Jeremy Thorne (2-3, 5.22) to face off against the Cards right-hander Scott McGregor (4-3, 2.68). The game will start at 7:10 and the gates will open at 6.
