Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

SAN ANTONIO, TX. - Jeremy Johnson's pitching and hitting and Jon Gaston's sensational play at the wall in the ninth carried the Hooks to a 3-2 win over San Antonio in the opener of this four-game series Monday night at Wolff Municipal Stadium.

Johnson (3-6) kept the Missions off the scoreboard until the fifth and finished with two runs allowed on nine hits and a walk through seven innings. He struck out four and threw 117 pitches.

The North Carolinian also got the job done with his bat, going 2-for-2 on the night with a walk and a run. Johnson ignited Corpus Christi's three-run outburst with a single to lead off the fifth. J.B Shuck followed with his second single of the evening to put men at first and second.

German Duran popped up in foul ground attempting to bunt to move the runners, and Gaston flied out to center. Koby Clemens kept the inning alive with a walk - one of six issued by San Antonio starter Wynn Pelzer (6-6).

With the bases loaded, Jimmy VanOstrand drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to push Johnson across with the game's first run. Marcos Cabral followed with a crisp single to left, plating Shuck and Clemens for a 3-0 score.

Cedric Hunter provided both runs for the home team. He singled to right with two on and one out in the fifth to send Matt Buschmann home from second in the fifth. In the seventh, Hunter lofted his third home run of the year over the wall in right, pulling the Missions to within a run at 3-2.

San Antonio, now 13-20 at home this season, managed three hits in the ninth off closer Danny Meszaros but could not plate the equalizer. Jesus Lopez opened the frame with a pinch-hit single to right, bringing Andrew Parrino to bat.

Parrino crushed the first pitch from Meszaros deep to right-center, where Gaston, racing back and to his right from his position in right field, caught Parrino's fly at full speed while slamming into the wall. Immediately, Gaston spun off the wall and threw a perfect strike to Clemens at first to double off Lopez. Gaston's throw never touched the ground. He now leads the Texas League in outfield assists with 13.

Hunter and Logan Forsythe, though, provided back-to-back singles to put runners at first and second. Meszaros notched the final out when he got Matt Clark to bounce out to Duran at second.

The result insures a winning half for Corpus Christi for the first time since the second half of the 2007 season.

Game two of the series and the final game of the first half takes place Tuesday night at 7:05. Jared Wells (4-2) battles San Antonio's Corey Kluber (2-5).
