Springfield Cardinals News Release

Little Rock, AR - After splitting a four game series with NW Arkansas, the Cardinals traveled east to face the Arkansas Travelers in a four game series with a pair of Double-A rookies on the mound.

In game one on Monday, the Cardinals jumped out to lead as Travelers' starter Tyler Chatwood allowed two single to Tony Cruz and a two-out RBI single to Aaron Luna to give the Redbirds a 1-0 lead.

Mark Diapoules made his Springfield Cardinals debut and pitched a scoreless 1st inning. The second frame was a bit different though as he hit the first two batters before walking Abel Nieves to load the bases with no outs. Efren Navarro followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game 1-1. Diapoules would then induce an inning-ending double play to get out of the 2nd inning.

The Cardinals bats exploded in the 3rd and would eventually knock Chatwood from the game in the inning. With one out, Tony Cruz walked and Matt Carpenter and Curt Smith each singled to load the bases. Aaron Luna would coax a walk to force in a run before Adron Chambers cleared the bases with a three-run triple. Pete Kozma followed with a single to center field to score Chambers making the score 6-1.

Arkansas would get a run back in the bottom of the 3rd as Diapoules walked the first two batters before allowing an RBI double to Kevin Ramos to bring the score to 6-2. The Cardinals' starter would get out the inning with a fly ball double play and a strike out.

In the 4th, the Cardinals added another run as Tony Cruz led off with a double and would score on an RBI double by Curt Smith to give Springfield a 7-2 lead.

The Travs got another run across in the bottom of the 4th as Abel Nieves drew a lead off walk and went to second on a ground out. Efren Navarro then singled to right field and Nieves was stopped at third, but the throw from right field missed the cut off man sailing to the plate advancing Navarro to second and the throw from catcher Tony Cruz to second base went into center field allowing Nieves to score making the score 7-3.

Springfield added another run to their tally in the 5th without getting a hit as Mike Folli and Antone DeJesus walked. Daryl Jones then grounded a ball to first for an out and the first baseman fired to second to try and double up DeJesus, but the throw hit the runner's back and went into center field scoring Folli to give the Cards an 8-3 lead.

Cardinals' starter Mark Diapoules lasted five innings allowing just three runs, two earned on two hits while striking out six batters in the Springfield debut.

The Cards would get two more runs on the board in the 6th as Aaron Luna walked, Adron Chambers singled and Pete Kozma drove in a run with an RBI single. Andrew Taylor then came in out of the bullpen to relieve Jeremy Haynes and threw two wild pitches allowing a run to score to give Springfield a 10-3 advantage.

The Travelers would put another run on the board in the bottom of the 7th in Blake King's second inning of work as Clay Fuller connected on a solo home run, his 4th of the year, the bring the score to 10-4.

Springfield answered with a run in the top of the 8th as Daryl Jones drew a walk with the bases loaded to force in another run bringing the lead back to seven runs for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals would use Tom Eager and Francisco Samuel out of their bullpen to get the final six outs to preserve the 11-4 win over the Travelers.

Springfield will continue their four game series at Arkansas Tuesday night. In game two, Springfield will send right hander Scott McGregor in his AA debut to the mound against right hander Jeremy Thorne (2-3) for the Travelers.

The Cardinals will be on the road until June 25th when they return to Hammons Field for a four game series with Tulsa. Friday Night Fireworks will light up the sky thanks to our friends at AM Pyrotechnics after the game with the Drillers.
