Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Arkansas Travelers took the series finale, 8-6, against the Springfield Cardinals before 6,611 fans at Hammons Field on Sunday afternoon. The two teams combined for 14 runs on 25 hits with three errors in the back-and-forth battle.
The Cardinals (5-11) came out swinging, plating a pair of early runs against RHP Kyle McGowin in the bottom of the first. CF Charlie Tilson got the rally going with a leadoff walk, before motoring his way to second base with a steal. After a pop out, Tilson stole his way to third base as well, before trotting home on a screaming RBI double to left field by LF Jacob Wilson. With Wilson on at second, DH Jonathan Rodriguez ripped an RBI single to left, plating Wilson for the 2-0 lead.
Cardinals RHP Nick Petree (L, 0-2) kept the Travelers (11-5) off the board through his first two innings, but Arkansas struck in the top of the third to tie it. With one down, SS Drew Maggi got on with a single. Petree retired 2B Sherman Johnson with a foul out, but CF Chad Hinshaw kept the inning going with a double, putting runners at second and third. DH Cal Towey worked a walk to load the bases, followed by a two-run single from 3B Brian Hernandez, squaring the score at 2-2.
Arkansas kept the bats going in the top of the fourth with a solo home run from 1B Wade Hinkle, before adding one more in the top of the fifth. Johnson led off with a single and quickly stole second base, but Petree battled back with consecutive strikeouts. However, Hernandez struck with an RBI double to bring in Johnson and stretch the lead to 4-2. Petree responded with a quick strikeout of C Charlie Cutler to strike out the side and keep the Cardinals close.
Springfield came roaring back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tilson once again sparked the rally, swinging himself on with a single through the right side, which also extended his season-long hitting streak to six games. 2B Breyvic Valera then ripped a single to right field, with Tilson trying to advance to third on the play. The throw from RF Kentrail Davis bounced away from 3B Brian Hernandez for an error, enabling Tilson to pop up at third and come home on the play. After a Wilson single advanced Valera to third, Rodriguez delivered a two-run double to left field that brought in both runners and led to more. On the throw home from left field, Rodriguez took off for third base. After not getting the runner at the plate, C Charlie Cutler tried to throw out Rodriguez at third base. Cutler, though, threw the ball away for an error, allowing Rodriguez to come all the way home on his double. The three runs on the one play catapulted the Cardinals into the 6-4 lead.
The Travelers did not stay down for long, plating four of their own in the top of the sixth. With two on and one down, RHP Chris Thomas took over on the mound. Thomas struck out the first batter he faced in quick order, but then Johnson hit a fly ball to left field. LF Starlin Rodriguez, who had just checked into the game, tried to get underneath the Johnson fly ball deep in left, but lost his balance while trying to make the catch, resulting in an error that allowed both runners to score and Johnson to wind up at second base. Hinshaw then brought in Johnson with an RBI double, before racing home from second base on an RBI single by Towey, lifting the Travelers back in front, 8-6.
The Travelers received 4.1 scoreless innings out of their bullpen, including 2.1 innings from RHP Eduard Santos (W, 1-0). RHP Danny Reynolds kept the Travs narrow lead intact with a scoreless eighth, before RHP Trevor Gott (S, 4) closed the 8-6 win for Arkansas with a scoreless ninth.
