Arkansas Travelers News Release

NORTH LITTLE ROCK - The Arkansas Travelers earned their first win of the season against the Midland RockHounds on Friday night in a 3-0 shutout victory. Bouncing back from Thursday's blowout loss, the Travs received an outstanding pitching performance from right hander Jeremy Thorne (1-0) and a two-hit night from shortstop Andrew Romine, who drove in the winning run. Designated hitter Paul McAnulty added his first home run while Ryan Aldridge and Jordan Walden dominated in relief.

Thorne struggled last Saturday in his season debut at Midland, but he came out Friday with an aggressive approach and extra life on his fastball. The big righty delivered the Travs' longest performance from a starter lasting 6.2 innings, while holding the Hounds to six singles and two walks with three strikeouts.

Midland lefty Pedro Figueroa (0-1) allowed only two hits in a six-inning performance while whiffing five against two walks. The winning run came across in the third inning when Figueroa walked Efren Navarro with one out. After the second out, Navarro stole second base and streaked home when Matt Sulentic couldn't get to Romine's soft single to center field.

Thorne allowed a pair of two-out singles in the fourth inning, putting runners at first and third base. Then Thorne fielded a high bouncer off the first base side of the mound hit by Steve Kleen. Navarro also came over to attempt to field the ball leaving first base wide open, and Thorne beat Kleen to the bag by sliding feet first to end the threat. Midland never had another runners reach third base.

McAnulty gave the Travs' bullpen breathing room when he led off the seventh with the club's first home run at Dickey-Stephens Park, off Arnold Leon. Julio Perez followed with a hard double to left field and got third base on a wild pitch. Alberto Rosario's suicide squeeze bunt dropped perfectly off the third base line bringing Perez to the plate for a 3-0 Travs lead.

Thorne handed the ball to Aldridge who went 1.1 innings pitching around a single and a hit batter in the eighth to strikeout three batters. Then Walden blew away three batters for a shutout ninth earning his first professional save.

Time of game was 2:26 and the paid attendance was 5,185

The rubber match of this three-game series is scheduled for Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. Travs lefty Michael Anton (1-0, 1.80) goes up against Hounds southpaw Anthony Capra (0-1, 3.86).
