Drillers Score Late For DH Split

April 17, 2010 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release

The Tulsa Drillers were held to a combined total of only one run and five hits in a doubleheader Saturday night in Corpus Christi, but it was still good enough to gain a split of the two games with the Hooks. A throwing error in the seventh and final inning of the second game allowed the Drillers to escape with a 1-0 win, after the Hooks had won game one 5-0.

Tulsa got the game-winning run in game two without hitting a ball out of the infield. With the score tied 0-0, Ryan Harvey drew a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh inning. After Jeff Kindel sacrificed him to second, Scott Beerer flied out for the second out of the inning. Kiel Roling extended the frame by reaching on an infield single that advanced Harvey to third. Dayton Buller followed with a routine ground ball to Marcos Cabral, but the third baseman threw high and into the first base dugout, allowing Harvey to come home with the go-ahead run. For Cabral, it was his third throwing error of the game.

The unearned run broke a streak of 27 straight scoreless innings for the Drillers. Their last run had scored with two outs in the fifth inning of their game with San Antonio on April 13.

The game two win still did not come easy as the Hooks threatened in the bottom of the seventh. T.J. Steele lined the first pitch from closer Craig Baker into center field for a base hit. Baker retired the next two hitters before Jack Shuck reached on an infield single that moved the tying run into scoring position. With a chance to make up for his error, Cabral grounded out to end the game.

Stu Pomeranz was credited with the win after working a scoreless sixth inning.

Tulsa starting pitcher Bruce Billings blanked the Hooks through the first five innings on only two hits.

In game one, the Drillers were held to only two singles as they failed to score a run for the second straight game.

Corpus Christi starter Jordan Lyles evened his record at 1-1 with six scoreless innings. Brandon Durden (0-1) was charged with the loss despite allowing only two runs in five innings.

The Hooks got homers from catcher Lou Santangelo and first baseman Koby Clemens.

Tulsa now travels to San Antonio and will begin a 3-game series with the Missions at 4:05PM Sunday afternoon. Keith Weiser (0-0, 1.42 ERA) will make his second start of the season against Corey Kluber (0-0, 1.80 ERA) of the Missions.
