
Travieso, 2 Relievers Combine on Dragons 3-Hit Shutout Win

Dayton, Ohio-Dayton starting pitcher Nick Travieso and two relievers combined on a three-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 6-0 on Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. The attendance total of 9,509 was the largest of 2013 for the Dragons and only 49 short of the franchise record.
The Dragons improved to 29-24 in the second half and pull to within two and one-half games of first place Great Lakes. The Dragons remained two games behind Bowling Green in the race for the East Division wildcard spot. There are 17 games remaining to be played.
Travieso (7-3) worked six innings and was sensational, allowing just two base runners to notch the win. He allowed no runs on two hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Jesus Adames pitched two perfect innings in relief of Travieso and Abel De Los Santos tossed a scoreless ninth, allowing an infield single, to close it out.
The Dragons took the lead in the first inning when Jesse Winker and Seth Mejias-Brean drew back-to-back walks before Daniel Pigott drilled a double to right-center field to bring in both runners and make it 2-0. Dayton added three more runs in the third inning. Beau Amaral started the inning with a bunt single on went to third on Winker's single to right. Mejias-Brean drilled a double to the fence in left-center to drive in two runs, and Jeff Gelalich singled to right to bring in another run and make it 5-0. The Dragons added an unearned run in the eighth to close out the scoring.
The Dragons finished with nine hits. Gelalich led the way with three, and Beau Amaral picked up two. Pigott and Mejias-Brean each had a two-run double.
The Dragons host the Loons on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Fifth Third Field as they try for a sweep of the three-game series. Amir Garrett (0-2, 6.30) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes' Zachary Bird (1-3, 5.71). The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 and Time Warner Cable channels 23 and 372. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com. Friday's game will be followed by a four-game series at Fifth Third Field against West Michigan starting Saturday night.
