Lake County Captains News Release


(Eastlake, OH) - Luis Morel (5-3) pitched five and two thirds scoreless innings in relief and helped the Captains (27-25) defeat South Bend (31-22) by a final of 1-0. Morel allowed just two hits and he walked two and struck out six. The Captains now have thrown eight shutouts on the season. Lake County has won five straight games.

Lake County scored first when Dorssys Paulino hit his fifth homerun of the season into the left field bleachers and the Captains led 1-0. The homerun for Paulino was his fifth of the season and was the difference in the game. The Captains had just four hits in the ballgame. Besides the homer, Eric Haase, Yhoxian Medina and Richard Stock all had singles.

LHP Ryan Merritt (6-9) started the game for Lake County and did not get a decision. Merritt twirled three innings as expected and did not factor into the decision. Merritt allowed just two hits and he struck out two. RHP Jack Wagoner pitched one third of an inning and struck out one. He earned his second save of the season.

RHP Braden Shipley (0-1) got the ball for South Bend and took the loss. Shipley pitched five innings and allowed three hits, one earned run and four strikeouts. Shipley allowed the homer to the second hitter of the ballgame. Brad Allen pitched the final three innings and allowed two walks and struck out four.

The Captains will be back in action on Friday. South Bend will be in Eastlake for the finale of a three game series. The Captains will start RHP Dylan Baker (7-6, 3.95) and South Bend will counter with RHP Rob Coe (3-1, 3.25). First Pitch will be at 7:00 PM from Classic Park.

Friday's game will be followed by a Firework's Friday Night presented by Universal Windows Direct. Following the fireworks spectacular, the Captains Friday Night Concert Series continues with Stone Pony which is group of nine veteran musicians who have been honoring the music of Jersey's own Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. They will perform on-stage adjacent to Castaways Bar.

Friday, the first 1,000 kids 12 and under will receive a Captains Replica Road Jersey courtesy of Stanley Steemer.

Finally, the Lake County Captains Middle Ages Night, featuring over 45 performers from the Society of Creative Anachronism in a Renaissance Faire atmosphere will take place on Friday throughout the game. There will be Arts and Sciences around Classic Park which include Dancing, Costuming, Fiber Arts, Calligraphy/Illumination, Heraldry, Music (several musicians) and Leatherwork. There will also be a Post-Game Battle Melee in right field as participants will fight in full metal armor. There will be many other Middle Ages trivia, facts, in-game promotions, and cuisine including turkey legs.
