Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, Pa. - What started as a pitchers' duel ended in an offensive explosion for the Traverse City Beach Bums, as they powered their way to a 7-2 victory over the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, at CONSOL Energy Park Monday night.
Wild Things starting pitcher Jeff Sonnenberg took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before surrendering a two-out RBI double to Andrew Marshall, driving in C.J. Ziegler, who reached on an error, for the game's first run.
Traverse City starter Kevin Reese went until the sixth inning before allowing a run. Jacob Dempsey singled to lead off the sixth. Adam Amar then roped a ball opposite field into the gap and legged out his first-career triple, scoring Dempsey from first to tie the game at 1-1. Two batters later, Billy O'Conner hit a single over a drawn in infield chasing home Amar and giving the Wild Things a 2-1 lead.
The lead, however, was short-lived. With one out in the top of the seventh, J.T. Hall singled for the Beach Bums. After Sonnenberg got Ziegler to ground out for the second out, Bobby Spain stepped to the plate and bombed a 1-1 over the right field wall for his second homer of the season, giving his team a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the eighth, the Beach Bums used the long ball again to extend their lead. With two runners on, Chase Burch sent a no-doubter deep over the left field wall on a 1-0 offering from Sonnenberg to make the score 6-2. It was his fifth home run of the season. He has 22 RBIs to the team.
The next batter, Hall, followed suit and sent a solo shot to center field, his second of the season, marking the end of Sonnenberg's night. He went 7.2 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits while striking out four.
Justin Edwards pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Wild Things to stymie the Beach Bum offense for the rest of the game.
Reese had a solid outing, scattering two runs and four hits over seven innings. He struck out four and walked four. Scott Dunn finished off the game for Traverse City, going two innings while striking out five, including striking out the side to end the game in the bottom of the ninth.
The Wild Things offense has been dormant in the first two games of the series, combining for 10 hits and four runs. The Beach Bums have outscored Washington 15-4 so far in the series and have outhit them 23-10.
The Wild Things close out their six-game home stand and the series against Traverse City with a special noon start time Tuesday at CONSOL Energy Park. Pre-game coverage starts at 11:55 a.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM.
