Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Sean Rodriguez' ninth-inning single to right-center scored Coby Smith for the decisive run as Arkansas beat Corpus Christi 6-4 Thursday in Texas League baseball before 6,537.
The Hooks slip to 27-24 in the South Division second-half race, three games behind first-place Frisco. Arkansas is 26-25.
After Rodriguez' heroics, Corey Myers and Freddy Sandoval executed a suicide squeeze for an insurance run.
Tim Lavigne (0-1) pitched the ninth for Corpus Christi. Smith walked to open the frame and was sacrificed to second by Adam Morrissey. Sandoval was intentionally passed and moved to third on Rodriguez' blow before Myers laid down the bunt.
Jeff Kennard (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless eighth. Darren O'Day picked up his sixth save with two strikeouts in the ninth.
Corpus Christi scored single runs in each of the first two innings. Tommy Manzella extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single to left-center. Michael Johnson followed suit and Ray Sadler was struck with a pitch to load the bases for Francisco Caraballo, who smashed a one-hop single deep in the hole at shortstop.
In the second, Josh Flores, the Hooks' No. 9 hitter, dropped a one-out double down the right-field line. He stole third base and motored home on a throwing error by Myers.
The Travelers answered with three runs in the third. Brad Coon led off with a single and scored Arkansas' first run on a Smith double to left. Smith then advanced to third on a groundout. One out later, Rodriguez drew a base-on-balls and promptly stole second before Myers' single up the middle plated both runners.
Arkansas extended its lead to 4-2 in the fifth. Hooks starter Brian Bogusevic struck out Morrissey to begin the inning, but then loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batsman. Michael Collins made him pay with an RBI single to right. Corpus Christi manager Dave Clark then pulled Bogusevic for Josh Miller.
Sadler's 21st home run of the season, a two-run shot into the Hooks' bullpen, knotted the game at four. His round-tripper was preceded by a Johnson walk.
The Hooks' left fielder has driven in 27 runs in the last 27 games.
Bogusevic permitted four runs, seven hits, three walks and struck out three. Miller covered 3 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed a hit and struck out three.
League ERA leader Miguel Gonzales worked into the sixth for Arkansas. He was responsible for three earned runs, seven hits, three walks and two strikeouts.
Arkansas' Fernando Rodriguez (6-3) faces Miguel Asencio (0-1) in the series finale Friday.
