Danbury Trashers News Release
In what was the Trashers' longest road trip to date over a single week, Danbury's Bad Boys earned a 3-1 mark for six points as they extended their lead to a five-point margin over the Adirondack Frostbite in the Eastern Division with wins over Richmond, Kalamazoo and Motor City. The lone blemish was last Friday night in Flint as the Trashers fell by a final score of 4-3 after being outscored 3-0 in the first period.
With a pair of home games coming up this week, the Trashers currently have a stellar 19-8-1 record for 39 points as they will look to become the first UHL team to pick up 20 wins this season as they host Elmira on Friday and Saturday nights in a special holiday weekend at the Danbury Ice Arena (See below for more details).
TRASHERS WEEK IN REVIEW
BAYRACK NETS TWO, STIRLING'S 40 SAVES LEAD DANBURY TO 5-2 WIN OVER MOTOR CITY TO EXTEND 1ST PLACE LEAD TO FIVE POINTS
December 12, 2004
A scoreless first period in which Danbury netminder Scott Stirling was peppered with 18 shots by the worst team in the UHL turned around quickly over the final two frames as the 1st place Trashers soundly defeated Motor City 5-2 on Sunday night to wrap up their four-game road trip with a 3-1 mark.
Danbury scored the first two goals of the game just 39 seconds apart, as Semir Ben-Amor's 5th of the season at the 2:46 mark was followed by Blake Bellefeuille's goal at the 3:25 mark. Both Brent Gretzky and Jeff Daw assisted on the goals.
Ryan Baker's 2d of the season cut the Trashers lead in half at the 5:03 mark, but Danbury's Mike Bayrack scored the first of two goals at the 13:12 mark on an assist by Ben-Amor.
Despite being the worst team in the league, Motor City fought to within a goal in the 3rd period on a David Bonk goal at the 8:03 mark, but Alex Goupil redirected a Mario Larocque drive at the 12:47 mark for his 4th of the season. Bayrack then scored an empty net goal with 19 seconds left to seal the win.
Stirling stopped 40-42 shots for his league leading 16th win of the season. He is 11-0-1 in his last 12 starts. Rod Branch stopped 34 of 38 shots in his 13th loss of the season.
STIRLING'S 31 SAVES, BIG EFFORT IN SHOOTOUT LEAD TO 3-2 TRASHERS WIN OVER KALAMAZOO
December 11, 2004
Mike Bayrack and Brent Gretzky scored shootout goals for the 2nd time in the last week as they helped lead Danbury to a 3-2 victory over Kalamazoo on Saturday night at Wings Stadium to keep their three-point lead over Adirondack in the Eastern Division.
The Trashers looked to get off to a quick start and Bruce Richardson's power play goal at the 3:47 mark from Jeff Daw and Blake Bellefeuille gave Danbury an early 1-0 lead.
However, the Danbury lead was short lived as the Wings scored a power play goal at the 9:18 mark of the 1st as Sean Starke netted his 2nd this season against the Trashers on assists by Daniel Carriere and Shaun Fisher.
The Wings took a 2-1 lead in the second on another power play goal, this one from Kevin Kotyluk from Carriere and Tyler Willis.
Danbury had trouble getting off shots in the 1st period, but they attacked Wings goaltender Chad Alban in the 2nd and 3rd periods for 11 shots each time and finally scored as JF David netted his 4th of the season on a rebound in front of the Kalamazoo net.
In the shootout, the Trashers earned goals from Gretzky and Bayrack, who were the same two goal scorers in the shootout win over Port Huron last Sunday. Tim Turner scored in the shootout for Kalamazoo.
Scott Stirling stopped 31 of 33 shots to improve his record to 15-4-1. He hasn't lost a game in over a month. Alban's record falls to 8-9-1 with the defeat.
FLINT SCORES BIG IN FIRST PERIOD TO HOLD OFF DANBURY 4-3
December 10, 2004
Former Trasher Jim Duhart scored a 1st period goal with an assist, while teammate and former Dallas Stars forward Rob Valicevic tallied a pair of goals in the initial period as the Generals used a quick start to defeat Danbury 4-3 on Friday night from Perani's Hockey World.
Despite falling behind 3-0 after the first period, the Trashers fought hard and stayed in the game after Mike Bayrack scored at the 12:09 mark of the 2nd period from Mario Larocque to cut the Generals lead to 3-1. However, Chad Grills scored his 2nd of the season from Jason Selleke and Bobby Kulkulka at the 16:48 mark of the period in what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.
Jeff Daw would score the first of two 3rd period goals at the 1:25 mark of the period from Larocque and Doug Christensen and the other at the 15:44 mark of the period from Blake Bellefeuille and Bruce Richardson'both power play goals.
Danbury had a golden opportunity to score another 3rd period goal when they had a full two-minute, two-man power play advantage that started at the 3:23 mark of the final period, but Marco Emond made several stellar saves to prevent a goal that could have ended up forcing a shootout.
Guillaume Lavallee started and stopped 23 of 27 shots on net for the Trashers, while Emond turned away 33 of 36 shots on goal. The Trashers maintain a three-point lead in the Eastern Division following an Adirondack loss to Richmond on Friday night.
THREE POWER PLAY GOALS LIFT DANBURY TO 5-2 WIN OVER RICHMOND
December 8th, 2004
Despite entering Wednesday's game in Richmond with the lowest ranked power play in the UHL, the Danbury Trashers utilized the man-advantage as they scored three power play tallies to lift themselves to a 5-2 win over the RiverDogs at the Richmond Coliseum.
A relatively slow first period finally opened up as Jeff Daw scored the first of two goals at the 15:33 mark of the period from Brent Gretzky and Doug Christensen for the only goal of the period.
Richmond tied it up on JJ Wrobel's 6th of the season from Jonathan Gagnon at the 9:10 mark of the period, but the Trashers regained the lead for good on Mike Bayrack's 11th of the season at the 15:13 mark from Mario Larocque.
Larocque scored his 2nd of the season on a blast from JF David at the 9:05 mark of the 3rd period, also assisted by Bayrack on the power play. Richmond's David Hymovitz pulled the RiverDogs to a goal at the 13:43 mark on a goal from David Brousseau and Francis Belanger.
The Trashers then pulled away with their 3rd power play goal of the night, this one from Bruce Richardson at the 16:35 mark from John Morlang and Daw. Daw then scored on an empty net from David and Richardson with 1:08 left in the game.
Richardson and Richmond veteran Trevor Senn dropped gloves after the final horn sounded in the only fight of the evening.
Scott Stirling stopped 34 of 36 shots for his 14th win of the season as the Trashers now hold a league-high 35 points on a 17-7-1 record. The Riverdogs fell to 11-10-1 with the loss.
