CHARLESTON, SC - Casey Friedrich collected 10 strikeouts as the Asheville Tourists defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 6-5, in South Atlantic League action Thursday in front of 3,052 fans at Asheville's McCormick Field.
With the triumph, the Tourists win the first three games of the series and improve to 10-11 overall while the RiverDogs slip to 11-10.
The RiverDogs took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Brian Baisley lined a leadoff double only to race around the bases to score after a wild pitch and pass ball. Dan Brewer followed with a walk before Asheville starter Friedrich uncorked a wild pitch and an additional passed ball that plated Brewer from second.
Asheville responded in the home half of the second to cut the lead to 2-1 when James Cesario cracked a leadoff double to center. Erik Wetzel bunted to third base for a single, but RiverDogs third baseman Mike Lyon's throwing error allowed Cesario to score.
The Tourists seized a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the fifth when Scott Robinson slapped a single to left. Delta Cleary dropped a sacrifice bunt that was misplayed by RiverDogs starter Andrew Brackman which allowed both runners to be safe. Jordan Pacheco followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved Robinson and Cleary into scoring position. Keil Roling added a two-run single to right that plated both Robinson and Cleary.
Asheville added three runs in the bottom of the sixth frame to take a commanding 6-2 lead when Wetzel drew a leadoff walk and then advanced to second after a groundout. A Thomas Field walk brought Robinson to the plate and then laced a single to left that scored Wetzel while Field scampered to third. RiverDogs left fielder Ray Kruml's throwing error on the play allowed Robinson to scoot to second. Pacheco hammered a two-run double to left that drove in Field and Robinson.
The RiverDogs narrowed the deficit to 6-5 in the top of the seventh when Melky Mesa cracked a leadoff single to left and then moved to second after a groundout. Lyon laced a double to center that drove in Mesa. Kruml added a single to left that knocked in Lyon and then raced to third after a throwing error by Tourists left fielder Scott Robinson. Carmen Angelini lifted a sacrifice fly to left that drove in Kruml for the RiverDogs' third run of the inning.
Asheville's closer Kurt Yacko allowed one hit but struck out the side in the top of the ninth to shut the door on the RiverDogs as he earned his second save of the season.
Tourists' starter Friedrich (2-1) struck out 10 RiverDogs in addition to two earned runs off of five hits through six innings pitched for the victory.
Charleston starter Brackman (0-3) allowed four runs (two earned) off of seven hits and struck out six in the defeat.
Both team collected nine hits apiece; Lyon lead the RiverDogs with three base knocks while the trio of Robinson, Pacheco, and Roling each smacked two hits for the Tourists.
The RiverDogs and the Asheville Tourists complete their four-game set Friday at 7:05p.m. Charleston manager Torre Tyson has announced that righty D.J. Mitchell (3-0, 2.25 ERA) will take the mound while the Tourists counter with right-hander Dan Houston (0-1, 4.09 ERA).
